I want a bolt action rifle that I can use for hunting and as a beginner's precision rifle with a barrel that is thick enough to be threaded for a suppressor. Does anyone know anything about the Remington 700 SPS Long Range series? They have a .30-06 with a 26" barrel and a Bell & Carlson M40 tactical stock that piqued my interest. [h=1][/h]

Ruger Gunsite Scout
Remington 700 AAC-SD (1:10 Twist barrel)
Savage makes a few
Mossberg MVP-LR

I can build you a better rifle.

I am building one now for a Co-worker for long range shooting.

Tell me your budget, left or right handed bolt and let me work a rifle up for you. everyone of these factory rifles have gone cheap in many areas, mostly the stocks.. We cna build you a banger for a quality price.

Really, I don't even know where to begin or what to look for. I like the Timney trigger in my sporter and I like the 30-06 cartridge for hunting. I am trying to figure it all out still.

I love the .30-06. I do feel a stout .308 can be just as good 500yds and under

I am planning on a 16" .243ai mag fed built on a Rem700 short action soon. Hunting stock, 1-8x optic like you find on a AR-15. I want to keep it under 10lbs and be my brush gun / pig Slayer.

308 or 6.5 creedmoor. I like my ruger American Predator but I'm sure you can't go wrong with John building you one.

Side note, a .308 between 16"-18" with AICS mags is the key.

having already saddled this pony the Ruger American & the Savage are price piont guns.... the stocks are crap. The Rem SPS I had a 16&20 inch, the 20 got upgraded to a B&C Stock(waiting on cash for bottom metal& AI stock upgrade) and shoots fine... But its too damn heavy....I picked up a Ruger scout and its a great host for can work& it accepts mags. Imo,JBoyette is right building is the way to go v/s upgrading cause even going with a gen2 5R that has a slight smaller profile it still balances funky.... personally id have someone thread a proof barrel(16-18) on a rem 700 action& drop it in a AI chassis & pick up a few mags and be done with it...

I found myself consolidating guns&calibures and moving to30 cal , so i could have a heavy bench gun with the right twist &one for dragging around...

I am building a 300 blackout for the same reason...not a good all around choice on the market.

I need a 20" barrel to work with the suppressor that I want. I guess aisc makes mags for 30-06 also?

MagPul does.

Why do you need a 20" to make the can work????

So to recap thus far. 20" min barrel. Timney trigger, 0.75" diameter muzzle threaded to 5/8 spec. Hunter type stock.

that was the min barrel length for a 30-06 in their literature.

Here is a quick rendering of what I think would be a great fit.

This would be the following:

700CDL Classic Deluxe in 30.06 cut to 20" and threaded
MagPul Detach Bottom metal with 2x 5rnd mags
Badger Ord Bolt Knob
Warne Scope Base

Price: $1299.95

Done within 6 weeks from date or order.

I really like the Savage TR .308 (20" barrel, 5R rifling, accustock, DBM, accutrigger, threaded, oversized bolt knob). They sell multiple versions all around $5-600, simply can't beat it out of the box. My friend has the same and recently got his Omega approved, even with cheap 147gr it was impressive, but both rifles love FGGM.

How does that compare to the magpul hunter stock? I looked at the trace armory budget precision build too.

That Magpul kit will drop right in or does it need some custom fitting? Looks like a great setup and probably lighter than my 700 by several pounds

Cheaper in cost.

What I posted is a factory REM 700 with a modified barrel and a inlet for the bottom metal.

what suppressor?

Was looking at an omega. I was set to purchase one until I realized it wasn't gonna work on my rifle with the barrel being too skinny.

buy it and during the 8 month wait get the rifle figured out lol I just bought a Harvester to run on my RAR predator 308 and my eventual precision rifle. Also the Omega is rated for a 20" barrel on 300 win mag so I would think an 18" 30/06 would be fine as long as its not a full auto BAR.

You got to cut it in + some bit of bedding work.

I would go with the that Magpul 700 build by @Jboyette.
Buy once, cry once deal.

When I talk to these companies on the phone, they tell me that .30-06 has more case capacity than .308 so they lump it with 300 win mag. But in reality, the pressures are more like .308

Yeah in the manual for the Omega 308 is a 16" minimum and 300 win mag is a 20" so I would think you'd be fine with a 18" 30/06 with it especially if its for hunting or precision shooting where the rounds per minute shouldn't be a problem

JBoyette ,

So the option you posted uses a CDL as a base rifle, what about this one as the base?
https://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-700/model-700-long-range

I have been trying to research the CDL barrel profile to see if it gets thick enough for the thread pattern or if it is thicker than the standard sps. I have a standard 700 SPS in 30-06, but the barrel contour is too skinny to thread to 5/8 spec even if the barrel is cut to 18".

I would love too. none of my dealers have that rifle in stock, or even listed as a option to buy in 30-06. in 25-06 yes, in 300 Ultra Mag yes, in 300WM yes,

LOL, I just clicked "Find a dealer" on the Remington website. It sent me to Hill's and Davi's in Raleigh. Neither one of those places even exist any more.

C , I am sort of in your situation. Still looking for a good long distance bolt gun that will not break the budget. I have suppression rated to 300WM, but no idea what rifle I will end up with. Currently running on 300blk Ruger American ans semi auto .308 platforms with excellent results up close. Will be curious to see what you settle on.

Guys,
I hate to say this but the truth is there is "no cheap" way in to precision. Its like a "cheap way" to racing. You can drive, you can shoot on low cost items, but you can not race or go precision "cheaply" its just not at that end of the spectrum.

Now can you over spend? Nope, can you wisely invest on a stack-able equipment? YES but its not CHEAP.

Budget, cost effectiveness, does not = cheap.

John

I am trying to not rush it. I think I might see if I can watch an f class match or shoot with someone else 1st.

Why?

If you want ot do it then you want to do it. Budget to buy quality stuff. Right now you can get a killer system for under $2000 with my company. Between the EPR at its normal cost, and my group buy on Burris Optics anyone can build a GREAT system for a lower cost!

I've got a Boyd's stock on my 700; shouldn't be too hard. Is it a width issue mainly?

@11bCIB I could not say, you just got to fit it and have at it.
