Looking to buy a fullsized 45 for the occasional Heavy Metal 3 gun match and/or IDPA or USPSA match. I've owned a bunch of them before and would consider owning most of them again:) The more I spend on the gun, the less I have to spend on ammo and match entry fees, so...

Low End:

Ruger American 45
XD 5" MOD 2 45 (know where a deal is)

Midrange:

Walther PPQ 45
Glock 41 or 21

High End:

HK 45
Single or Double Stack 1911 (Caspian- again I know where a good used one is)

My local guy says "don't buy the American". However, I've read the torture test and have heard mostly good things, but want to shoot it before I decide. So if anyone knows of a range with one to rent, let me know. Same with the HK or a G41. I've shot or owned most of the others including single and double stack 1911's.

I've owned 1911's and as much as I like them, I usually end up selling them, as they are the only handgun I own with a manual safety. I'm reluctant to carry it a and worry that I'll miss or forget the safety when it counts or that it'll slow me down at matches. Also, I don't love the takedown and reassembly. Always worried about creating the infamous "idiot" scratch. However, short of the Walther PPQ 45, I don't think any striker fired gun has as good a trigger as a "good" 1911 trigger. That being said both of the used 1911's that I am considering don't have "great" triggers and could be better.

Did I mention that I prefer to buy American? Just old habits from the son of a son of a WV Coal Miner. However, I've owned foreign guns before, and may again.

Input?

Thanks,

GregB

Have you considered the FNX 45? It's one of the best 45's around IMO. I'd get an XDM 45 before the XD45 if I was going springfield armory. And then there is the CZ 97 which I really want at some point. The real kicker is deciding if you want a striker fired gun or a hammer/safety gun. That will greatly impact your choices.

ding ding ding. Winner winner chicken dinner. Wouldn't even consider the HK45 over any FN pistol. Especially since you wanna buy American. FNX manufactured in good ol Colombia South Cackilacky

Had a basic FNX 45, not the tactical. Liked it, and it is on the list to be considered. However, there's no way to make the trigger any better that I'm aware of. I'd probably buy a 1911 again first. Unless, I found a crazy good deal on one. As for the TRP, if It had a rail I'd consider it. Yeah, I'm on the fence on striker vs. hammer...

As for XDM vs XD: From what I'm seeing the XD is/was on special where I was looking for @$350 delivered versus @$550 and up on the XDM. And a lot of the upgrades (magwell, etc) that I was looking at would work with the XD, but not the XDM.

XDs are decent pistols, plenty accurate, fairly reliable just don't try SWCs. Trigger is mush out of the box but useable. There's a couple Smiths that do wonders from that I've read, don't shoot mine enough to invest yet.

SA TRP is a good gun. I have an Operator TRP. Les Baer PII is a GREAT gun and a Les Baer PII with 1.5" 50yd grp guarantee is even better. I have both. I proved the guarantee with FGMM 230gr ball on the Ransom Rest. I had a Ruger "target" model. I dont anymore. STI 1911's have won more big name pistol matches than any other brand. But that's all I know about them.

S&w MP 45? Apex offers a great upgrade to the only problem that gun has.

If you’re going hk route look for a usp tactical. I have a hk45 and while I’m great with it the stock trigger has a lot to improve upon.

I finally got to handle one of these at the last Charlotte show.
I think I'm gonna end up with one.
And then put some CGW goodies in it.

OP, not sure if it would suit your needs, but Wifey has a Sig P220 and loves it. I like it, too. One of the smoothest .45s Ive ever shot.
