@Mike Overlay and all of you other helpful gurus..... :)

My friends own a really nice 2011 Cadillac SRX that is displaying the engine light. They have taken it to a local shop who is saying that his testing instrument is indicating that the first and third catalytic converters are ok but the one in the middle is a little off.....(I hope I've described that correctly) The vehicle runs like a top, has no performance issues, and has 103,000 miles.

Anyways......the shop guy mentioned that a dealership could make an adjustment in the sensory detection equipment or computer to raise the threshold and keep the catalytic converters from setting off the engine light. He mentioned that this was something that happens from time to time with the Cadillac SRX along that model year and that he does not have whatever tool or device the dealership has to make that adjustment.

Is this something any of you are aware of and would you advise taking it on to a dealership for that adjustment? Or is there something else that can be done to address the engine light issue?

Any help would really be appreciated. :)

Hey Shelton,

I briefly researched some of the technical service bulletins on the 2011 Cadillac SRX. Unfortunately, there were over 900 of them, not unusual for a late model vehicle, but I can't pinpoint the one pertaining to the #2 converter at the moment.

The first tune-up is due at 100k. Not sure about "make an adjustment in the sensory detection equipment or computer to raise the threshold" but if the engine isn't running 100% efficient neither will the converters. I would recommend doing a maint. tune-up with new spark plugs and a fuel induction cleaning first.

"sensory detection equipment"? It's a Cadillac not a Galaxy class Starship.:). Could be O2 sensor is out of spec.

There is a few posts below that indicate GM covers the catalytic converters for 200K miles.

We really need to know the exact code the computer has stored. It is possible that there might be a TSB for the problem the car is having that would include reprogramming the pcm with a different calibration if GM has seen there is a need for this but there is no way the dealer can adjust just that one parammeter. It could be a bad oxygen sensor or a converter going bad but there is no way to adjust for a failing part if that is the case. The shop should easily be able to tell what is going on by looking at the data stream and running a few tests. Unless there is a misunderstanding going on hear it sounds like your friend needs a better technican.

If you can get me the exact code and the cars vin number I can see if there is anything pertaining to a issue that would cause this when I get to work tommorow. If they have not changed the plugs yet and run a intake cleaning on it yet it needs to be done pronto. A misfire or worn plugs will kill a converter quick. I would have them go some where else to get it done.

Put a piece of duct tape over the light and drive hell outta it! I used to date a girl whose dad was a mechanic. This woman came into the shop and said her car was making a noise. He checked the oil and it didn't even show on the dipstick! She said the light came on last week and it bothered her so she put tape on it and kept driving! o_O
