Help with a knock - stumped...

Bell housing to transmission bolts behind the torque converter.

Huh, guess all the transmissions I've dropped the bolts are into the bell housing from the outside. I was able to pull the transmission out and leave the bell housing, clutch assembly on the engine.

And no, I'm not going to work on more for the experience!

Here’s the update...

The new starter spins the engine but is just as loud as the one that was defective. There’s still something going on there...

No knock was present at all. Just ran as it always did - quiet and smooth. Pulled the bellhousing and clutch to find the pilot bushing was shedding material. Pic below...

Buddy was checking out the trans and found a rough spot in the rotation of the input shaft. Divorces the intermediate housing and pulled off the cover to find this...

Long story short - there’s still an alignment issue at the crank-flywheel-starter and the trans is toast.

I appreciate you guys... I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on with the engine. I’m going to lift the engine, pull the oil pan and see if I can track down the thrust bearing for damage.

Honestly, I may just pull it all out and drop in that 4.0 after getting the trans rebuilt. Money I’d rather spend on other things, but can’t change things now...

Update... I snagged a “better” transmission from a Jeep salvage place Friday. Pulled off the top cover when I got home and found a broken 3-4 blocker ring. %*|!#. I looked at the gears while at the salvage place but didn’t check out all the other pieces.

I decided to make one good one from the 2 transmissions. I pulled the blocker rings from the trans with the broken gears. I then disassembled the better trans. I had the take the entire main cluster out and the front half apart to replace the parts, but it’s done and works on the bench!!

Trans is back in and seems to run fine with one Minor exception... There’s a small grinding when up or down shifting into 4th. Bad synchronizer... I’m not going to deal with it. I’ll double clutch until my engine dies or I decide that I’m ready for another project.

Took a nice long test drive and it felt great to be out and around topless and doorless.

Spare and broken parts...
