Planning a theater night at the Flat Rock Theater and B&B weekend in July. Booked a room at the Waverly Inn. Any good...

2-5hr hikes in the area?
Craft shops?
Must see places?

@Tim

Welcome!

The Waverly is definitely a nice place. Its location is a bit odd as it's bordered by a couple busy streets. But, well located for what you are looking to do.

Craft shops? Our Main Street is just a couple blocks from the Waverly is full of them. You can even wave at me as you walk by; my office is right in the middle of Main street.

If you need to source your own breakfast some morning, https://www.honeyandsaltnc.com/
Best BBQ in the state is at http://www.hubbahubbasmokehouse.com/
Both of those are proximate to the Flat Rock Theater.

The Sierra Nevada complex is just a cool place to check out for dinner, drinks on the lawn, or a free concert.

We have some very good choices for eats right here on Main street as well. To be honest, we also have some real duds that get unfairly positive reviews. Let me know what you're into and I'll steer you right. i.e. breweries, nightcaps, fine dining, just good food.

Hikes are abundant.

If you haven't been to the area, Dupont State Forest and the Triple Falls area is a must see. It will be crowded. If you're asking about 2-5 hour hikes and not a "300ft from the parking lot" hike, then I'd suggest coming into the Triple Falls area from the backside of the property, look up Guillon Farm parking area. You'll get a nice easy walk through the forest and come up on the falls from the other side of the crowd.

One of our favorite hikes is Ivestor Gap to Tenent Mountain. This is in the Black Balsam area off the Parkway, ~1 hour drive from your B&B. You'll hear people talk about Graveyard Fields as the high meadow hike to take...Tenent Mountain is the same views and topography with a much more chill crowd. Awesome views, not a difficult hike at all.

That time of year, there really is no way to completely avoid the crowds unless you truly want to get off the trail. I can give you some day hike spots that tend to follow river gorges, not mountain views if that's your speed.

Hannah Flanagans' is a must if you want a real Irish pub experience near Asheville. It's on main st in H-ville. I second the Sierra Nevada complex, it's an awesome place - I think they spent over $1B on the construction of it!

As Tim said, you are on the cusp of some great hikes, and some great drives. Get down to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure also if you can, it's a cool place that used to be super busy but I find that it's pretty laid back most of the time I have been.

As @Tim said, triple falls is a must! If you mountain bike bring it cause these are some of the best trails you will find. If you ever want to camp instead of a B&B go to Black Forest campground. More expensive then the state run campgrounds but so much nicer amenities. If you like Irish bars Dugan’s pub is pretty good.

It's all lies. It's terrible here.
And if you do come here and go home, be sure to tell everyone how terrible it is here and do not move here.
Especially Yankees. They would hate it here. Be sure to tell them to never come here.

Now that I’m here, I agree fully.

This sounds interesting, thanks.

Been to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure so we are going to skip those for now. Not really enough time there to do a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Might be too hot for an enjoyable hike so we're loading up the kayaks. I looked and there is a launch on the New River that's close by.

Horse Shoe River Bend Access US-64, Hendersonville, NC 28739 (828) 697-4884 https://maps.app.goo.gl/7AVk56i6Aaz21d658

That's the French Broad River. That launch is about 3 miles from my house.

When are you headed this way? If you wanted to save on kayak shuttle fees I may be able to help out.

@Tim, very generous offer. This won't be any serious kayaking, only 2-3 hours. We will put in and enjoy the river for an hour one way then back.

In the Big H this weekend!

What is the river like at that location? Are there many obstacles?

I replied via PM, but will put it here as well so folks don't think I ignored you. =)

We've had a ton of flooding since I've floated that area, so my info may be out of date, but it is mostly clear going through farmland with tree lined banks. Honestly, not the most scenic area. If it were me, I'd take the ~30 trip over to Rosman and float from NC-215 down to Brevard (and end my trip at Oskar Blues...)

Edit: I have NOT floated FROM that Hwy 64 launch area downstream. That's headed towards Sierra Nevada Brewery and may be a heckuva piece of water.

Got to Hendersonville about 12am and went strait to the French Broad at Horse Shoe landing:
5437 Brevard Rd, Horse Shoe, NC 28742
We had about 30min of kayaking in before the first T-storm developed. The river was high and fast due to the rains over the last day or two. We had just put both kayaks in the truck and tied them down when it poured!

Plan change: Go into town and look around. Nice town, well laid out although parking can be tough with 4ft of kayak sticking out past the bumper. Picked up some toys for the Grand Kids at Mast General. Checked out some shops on the way to Flat Rock, also looked at other Inns for future trips.

Checked in at the Waverly Inn. Nice old place, well kept. No complaints, probably stay again.

Dinner: The Black Rose. The BEST Reuben I've had in a while. My wife had the Portibello (sp?) burger, also good.

Flat Rock Theater: Nice playhouse, great seating. Enjoyed the play "Separate Beds".

Tomorrow: Hanging around the inn a bit then heading to Lake James for some flat water kayaking.

This makes me very sad. I can look out my office window and see this place. Still won't go in.

Next time you're in town, try Shine or Brook's Tavern. Even Black Rose is better than Hannah's.

Food wise or brew wise? Next time I'm there we will try both

Hannah's? Let's just say it's not a 'dive' bar, it's a dirty nasty ass bar that sometimes serves OK food.

Shine is 'fancy' but still a bar and great restaurant. Neat place if you can get the owner talking about how it took 8 years to open.

Brook's is a small joint with surprisingly good bar food.

Black Rose is your typical burger and a beer kinda place.
