Hey...Do We Delete Ads?

Now that we have that all straightened out lmao

Some forums don’t allow folks to delete their ad. Apparently it’s ok here. I wish it wasn’t though. Those same folks will bump an ad, after removing all the Info to post “sold” instead of marking the damn thing sold.

I don't have a dog in that fight and don't care either way, but I thought the decision to let members control their content was decided a while back.
And I agree on marking the ad sold instead of bumping it.

So we are opposed to gun registration, bills of sale, photo copies of DLs/Permits, don't let the guy keep your one-pistol permit in NC even though it is only good for one pistol...but yet lets maintain a registry of member sales with details in a forum that can be viewed by anyone on the internet (don't even have to be members).

Makes perfect sense.

Exactly.

I appreciate the root of your thought here, but you missed the point from @concepthomes1 's post above:

Speaking from my personal soapbox, not as staff.

If a member is willing to publicly post something for sale, it should remain.

We should all be aware that once something is posted in an open area of the forum, google/bing/nsa bots see it and index it probably before we finish the next bite of our sandwich.

Even your post is tied to your name, IP and whatever else. Even when you delete it, it’s on some archive at google or bing or Facebook or wherever.

Keeping the sales info helps keep sellers and buyers apprised of the market.

He's not making that up. Here's a low-level archive of the internet, easily accessible by anyone. IMagine if someone really wanted to taking archiving serious and had the resources to do so...
https://archive.org/web/

In other words...
If this is truly a concern of someone's, they should avoid posting their items on the internet at all.

Convince me that deleting your ad content enhances your privacy. With real reasons that have to do with the ad and NOT by comparison to other activities. I'm listening.

For S&G's, here's what was archived from the site October 2018:

All links are active, posts can be searched, threads read....

Actually all links are not active/working...click on a few. I also searched for specific ads and they don't come up. wayback.JPG

If you search google you'll find the links with most of the reliable historical info are the ones that take you directly to carolinafirearmsforum. And that is the difference, to find the information through google or archives people have to work at it and what they are looking for may not come up...but why would they bother when they can just come to the site because we keep it all easy access for them.

Since the ATF can just go to the gun dealer and look at their records, why don't we let them just store it electronically?

Why wouldn't we have more stuff in non-"open" sections of the forum including BST?

I strongly agree. Putting more content behind a “supporting member” paywall might motivate more frequent users of the forum to support it financially. ;)

Put up a poll to vote in the members only section and let the folks decide.

I am of the opinion that the internet never forgets, so “deleting” an ad that has sold is really only a mental exercise to make one feel falsely secure. If you put it on the web, it’s out there.

However, if someone wants to take part in this tin foil hatery then so be it. It is irritating when trying to go back and research your own prices or getting a feeling for stuffs value, but that’s just a minor irritation.

Last I checked, there’s already a member’s only BST. ;)
Yeah, but I’ve found most Supporting Members haven’t any money after writing those huge annual checks to CFF. :(

LOL. I just noticed you have me quoted at the end of each post. I feel special. But I’ve been told I’m special before.

Signature line worthy is big time man

I was talking with Geezer earlier, I think it's ok if we delete ads now.

Pretty sure it's now a best practice. Go!

I was thinking about the point raised earlier...

If I post that I want to sell something in the BST and someone responds to me via a PM, as suggested, and we complete the transaction discussion in PM, then what is there for the internet to track?

All they have is a record of me wanting to sell something a long time ago. (And possibly a record that I live too far away for some people.) Depending on my ad, there may not even be proof that I have the item that I am offering to sell.

That is a far cry from pictures of licenses / permits and documented transactions.

Well you just don’t understand sir. These people are selling guns to possible serial killers. Serial killers don’t go to prison. They come get the guy who had an add on CFF and slam the gavel GUILTY. Most of the murder convictions have come from this site. Check the inner web, it’s true.
