Rescued this unusual rifle...

High Standard was commissioned by Sears in 1953 to put it together. High Standard chrome lined barrel, FN Mauser K98 receiver made in Belgium, American walnut Bishop stock, push button floor plate in magazine, d&t, barrel is floated so it doesn't touch the stock. This one is from 1956. One commenter online said it is one of the finest rifles ever made!

Oh man, what a find.

The High Standard/Sears relationship sure produced some interesting firearms. By and large they're not super expensive either.

I'd not heard of this one, as I am usually paying attention to the .22 stuff. Thanks for sharing this.

Been scouring shops for awhile now to stumble on one of these, good solid action at a price that says take me through the woods

Absolutely.

I have some old handguns (1937 russian re-arsenal Luger, Nambu) in particular and hold them in my hand and wonder about the time they were first issued....to whom, under what circumstances, and the twisty trail that led them to end up in my ownership.

Same. My wife doesn't get it.
I'll buy something interesting I've never seen before (even if it's not gun related) just because I know the time i'm going to spend enjoying the process of looking it up, reading about it, etc is more economical than going to a movie or buying a book. And then afterwards, I still have the thing to play with and wonder.

Nice Find !
I had one of those in 270. what a shooter..
kick myself for selling it.
