I’m fabbing up an aluminum sheet metal chimney cap for an outdoor fireplace I’m building. It’s primarily to arrest sparks the way I’m building it since I’m close to a lot of pine straw, and also to keep rain out of the fireplace.

It will be about 5-6 feet above the open wood fire on top of a 16 x 24 flue. Not sure what kind of heat we are talking about at this height. I built big fires with my firebowl before so I expect it will get pretty hot, but probably not like headers on a car .

I’m looking for recommendations to paint mill finished sheet aluminum. It’s pretty shiny.

I would scrub well with a scotch brute pad and then degrease with rubbing alcohol and use this paint.

Any particular color you’re after?

All kinds of black grill paints out there for 1200° or so. I painted a silencer with a flat grey primer recently that’s rated to 2000°.

You could even do the air cure high temp cerakote (using the ~$5 PreVal sprayer) and it’s good up to 1800°. I’d recommend this one:

But seriously, they have a lot of colors in the high temp air cure category.

This is good to know because Rustoleum has limited color choices. I’m thinking dark brown (some places now call it “bronze”, like my gutters)

I’d leave it natural aluminum but the 1/2” expanded metal screen underneath the 24x32 aluminum cap is steel and will rust. Plus the whole thing is so big it will look a shiny barbecue grill on top of the big chimney, so Im trying to tone down the looks of the cap.

Here are the color options: https://www.cerakote.com/finishes/?tab=coatings&cat=GLACIER

They also have oven cure high temp, but the air cure is obviously easier to deal with. They have another line rated up to 800° if you think that’s enough...probably other color choices.

Sandblast the aluminum, or scuff it up with sandpaper and get after it.

You will be fine with high temp rust-oleum. Looking at around 800 degrees most likely unless its burning a bunch of wood. I would build it out of 26 gauge sheet metal in griptite which is ready to paint after degreasing. Paintable or normal sheetmetal can be bought at most hvac suppliers.
