House of Raeford new schedule

@hp468 have you ever talked to N4RMV on the radio? He has discussed raising meat chickens. They got a bunch of the Cornish Cross chickens. He said they are the laziest birds he's ever seen. They eat until they fall asleep and then sleep until the wake up and eat. Rinse and repeat, but they plump up for meat in short order.

Callsign sounds familiar but cant say that I have. Yea, i've heard meat chickens just eat and sleep. Got to slaughter them young or they will get too big to walk around.

What's the cost of raising chickens per pound of meat? I read a long time ago that rabbits were more efficient in converting food to meat? The plus with chickens is if you have the right breed you can get both eggs and meat while rabbits only lay eggs around Easter.

Cadbury eggs are the best eggs.

I guess I'm a meat chicken.
I’m sure there is at least one activity you regularly engage in that the chickens don’t. :p

Good question. Here’s a good write up on it: https://afarmishkindoflife.com/feeding-cornish-cross-chickens/

Bottom line:
On butcher day, we ended up with 48 birds. We actually had 49, but after plucking one bird we found a giant discoloration (bruise?) spanning the entire length of one side of its body. Since we weren’t sure of the cause, we opted to not put that chicken in our freezer. So our remaining cost stats are figured for 48 birds, since that’s what was useable for our freezer.

48 birds = 242 pounds of meat

$261 feed cost/242 pounds of meat = $1.08 cost per pound of meat

$1.08 per pound x 5 lb average dressed bird = $5.40 to feed each bird to butcher day (average)

Cost per chick = $2.40

Our cost (feed plus chick) = $7.80 per bird in our freezer

Feed costs are about $2 higher than their estimate currently. But still works out to less than $2 pe pound AND you know how they were raised, hopefully in a much healthier environment than a commercial factory.

"Almost $4/lb for boneless breasts."

that is a NOW lock-in.

in a month, $4 might be a "steal".
