I may be completely mis-remembering this, but wasn't one of the design parameters that John Browning was tasked with for the 1911 that it would be effective out to 100 yards? I seem to remember reading that in a gun rag years ago.

CD, I have a 1 1/2 inch barrel on a Ruger Sa that has been shown on here. I shot 12 times at a propane tank that was about 6 inches wide and 4 feet tall set out at a measure 300 yards. With witnesses I hit it 4 times. I was aiming at the top of a pine tree behind it!. 45 acp outta a 1 1/2 in barrel is kind like a mortar.
