How far do you commute for work?

6 miles. My boss tells me i am not a morning person. I tell him i am not awake until 30 minutes after i get to work. By that time i am in my work truck and on way out of the plant. I have done 3rd shift. I loved it. I would do it again if i get 4 10's again.

Before I closed the shop it was about 115' unless I saw something that need looking at on the way.

8 miles from my driveway to the parking lot, about a 10 to 15 minute drive depending on traffic. Then about a mile walk to the hospital. I had a job for the state where I drove 60 miles from my house to my office, and then when I went to nursing school that was at UNC Greensboro and that was another 60 miles. At this point I will never ever ever work more than 15 minutes from my home.

About 38 miles depending on which way i go, around 45 minutes. That is one plus about MI but the roads are horrible on the whole.

8 miles, takes 20-25 min depending on traffic. I have a mobile amateur rig, but I spend most of the commute using a Bluetooth headset to talk to my dad and my sister. Once in a while (like when the fair is in town or the weather takes a dive) I have to change up my commute. I also sometimes do shopping etc on the way home - I go by different stores than my wife.

My commute is about 60 miles each way taking about 1.25 hours. Getting into ham radio has made the commute into something much more enjoyable.

Twenty minutes, but it's from one point in Durham to another point in Durham so it feels more like

Work out of home office, but hit Raleigh or Greensboro during the week as needed..or further..e.g. DC area. Live in wilkes co.

I am a regional manager so my average is an hour. I have gotten used to it and an hour hardly seems like anything now. As long as it is not crazy traffic all is good. Now I do get paid mileage and my drive time is part of my expected 10 hour work day. If you ar working 12 hour days and then driving 2 hours that would make for a very long day. But is it worth it to only work 4 days a week while making more money? Only you can answer that..

I believe it will be. The drive won't be forever as we will move closer asap.

25 minutes. But when we lived in VA Beach it could be anything from 25 minutes to over an hour. So long as the traffic is always consistent and the commute is a length you can plan for it shouldn't be too bad.

Going in for me to start will be rough, even when Im used to going from First, to Third. From thomasville to hickory, it's all highway and Ill have to leave around 430pm to get there early enough for my 6pm shift start... So 5pm traffic.... Getting off work at 6am, hopefully wont be too bad on the way home for the first bit.

48 miles. Down 52 and 40 to Greensboro. 52 is like what I imagine it would be in a Mad Max movie most mornings! Then out to job site from there unless I have something lined up and can go straight there. Love my job but hate going to the office.

I worked “third shift” on my deployments and I’ve never adjusted back. I can get two hours of sleep one night and be dragging all day, and 8-9pm when it gets dark I perk right up.

I currently drive 11 miles one way; but previously drove 32 miles one way. This job change was nice

I walk down to the driveway. ....so my personal commute isn't bad....however I average 30-45k miles a year on my service truck.

I have commuted as much as an hour.....it depends on the drive.....here in NC it's not bad.....being stuck in Houston traffic it sucked!

My commute is an hour in the morning if I leave by 7, and over an hour in the evening even if I pay the 540 toll, easy 1.5 hours if I try and go the way I came. What sucks more than the time is the fact that I'm travelling due east at sunup and west at sundown.

Doing this long term smartly takes some lifestyle changes, or it did for me. You obviously have less free time, so the time you do have is more valuable. I also traded one of my gas guzzlers for a mini cooper that I average > 40 mpg with, but it's not just gas mileage you have to worry about. Any car driven that much is going to depreciate rapidly, even if it is "highway miles". Therefore it's best to drive not only a high MPG but also a relatively low value car to avoid taking a bath in depreciation.

21 miles each way. Anywhere from 35 minutes to an hour + depending on I-77 traffic.

6-8 miles, and 10-12 minutes. I'm usually going in before 5am, so little to no traffic.

48 minutes and 34 miles via car one way. About 40 minutes when I ride my bike. Haven't found anything that pays as well closer so willing to make the drive.

Can be a pain if I have a 10-13 hour day

My commute is so time sensitive it's ridiculous. It's about 24 miles one way but if I leave at 6-615 and hit the gym in the morning it takes 25 minutes. If I don't go to the gym I have to leave by 645 or I can't get to work by 8.
The evenings is just stupid and getting more stupid by the day. If I knock the door down at 5 I can typically get home by 6. If I leave at 505, all bets are off but the average is 630. I hate my commute only slightly more then I hate my job which I like only slightly more then being homeless.

OP, it sounds like it's worth giving it a shot. If everything goes well you can move closer and if it doesn't you can find another job.

@spittinfire ive noticed the similar kind of thing. Leave early and it just takes that much longer. There is no win for losing most times.

One morning I arrived a few minutes late so the next day I left 5 minutes early....was still a few minutes late. By the end of the week I was leaving 20 minutes earlier and arriving at the same time. I told my employer to just expect me a couple minutes late. I make up for the time during the day.

I'm still pretty much the same way. I always worked nights and loved it. You know what really sucks, is when guys you were in with are inviting you to their retirement ceremonies!

About 12 miles. Takes less than 20 minutes usually.
Longest commute I had was when we lived in Jamaica Plain section of Boston. 35 miles to Lowell MA. ABout 55 minutes each was going against the traffic. Then we bought a house in Lowell and I had a 2 mile commute and my wife had to drive into Boston. But as a teacher, she was leaving at 5AM so traffic wasn't bad for her.

I work in tech, from a home office. There isn't an actual office to go to, unless I want to trek to Syracuse, NY.

I just moved from Central MA, to Coastal NC, because I can.

7.5 miles. Used to take les than ten minutes. Now with more traffic lights, new housing developments with more traffic takes 15+ minutes depending on time of day.

I'm at about 8.2 miles. Pretty easy drive as I leave at 6:30.

about 5 miles for me. 7-10 minute drive most days if I take the interstate. Taking the local roads its a bit longer, and takes me about 15 minutes.

~35 miles, so about 40 minutes 3 days a week (2 days is ~30 steps). It is generally an easy commute and helps get my mind right before getting to the office or home. My boss offered to transfer me to Raleigh (roughly 17 miles) but I told her I would rather quit. Mileage-wise it would be less, time would save me about 10 minutes each way but the added stress would kill me. I commuted from Clayton to RTP, then Raleigh, for 12 years and that was more than enough.

on a bad day 15 minutes - bad days are the days i have to go in office which isnt often.

on better days i work out of my house which i greatly prefer. i hate driving. its amazing the amount of stupid you come across even in a 15 min commute.

my goal in life is to be a shut-in.

from the sticks to the hood, round trip is 50 miles a day. I get my share of diversity aka highways full of idiots, and then I go home and drink.

I do about 30 minutes. Thats usally the max I want to do as well.

But I have a friend that is going to try and get my hired at his work very soon, making a lot more money and having a lot more benefits but its 1 hour away. 12 hour shifts on third, 4 days on, 4 off.. so it wont be TOO bad once im used to working 3rd and then ASAP buy a house near the job
I have done 2 hours. I rode my harley to ease the pain.

Cover most of central nc so about 3 hrs one way is farthest I go to see customers but most of the time its 2 hrs or less and not back to back days unless I don't pay attention scheduling, plus I usually get to set meeting times within reason. Back to back days in a row gets old quick though for me and especially if it is dealing with sitting in traffic.
