How sharp is your ax?

After @Burt Gummer made fun of my ax I figured I'd clean and sharpen it. How's this Brian?

lol I wasn't making fun of the ax. I was making fun of you for rubbing in that you had THAT AX

Pretty sharp. But since youdrove it back down in that block, you should probably sharpen it again :D

Are you a flat, hollow or convex guy?

I like convex, easy to keep reasonably sharp and durable, but I can't get them as sharp as when I use hollow or flat grinds.

You're probably right. I should use a smaller one.

I just follow the stock edge. Looks pretty convex to me but we could ask @thrillhill I'm sure he'd know.

I think it's fair to say that most of ours start out as a flat grind and slowly work towards becoming convex. But it varies among makers. My Estwing for example, will forever be a hollow, not a lot you can do about that.

There is some solid science that says convex is the better grind. Hollow grind causes the material to pinch the further the blade goes into the wood. Convex spreads the fibers out at the beginning away from the body of the blade.

Convex is certainly the most desirable in my opinion, especially for your blades that will be handling "rougher" chores.

Part of the problem is, as odd as it sounds, a lot of knife and axe manufacturers are not knife or axe sharpeners. Most can be modified to suit.

But then every once in a while you'll run across a manufacturer like Bark River that produces a convex grind blade that is scary sharp and easy to maintain at the same time. That makes me happy!

And then somebody posts a picture of the 2 ugliest Bark Rivers ever made, and that makes me sad.

They are so ugly, that only someone who secretly thinks TOPS makes the best knives could like them.

They are so ugly, you should bring them by the house soon for me to check out!

LOL!

Hope to be coming by for some Monday fishing soon. I'm gonna bring my new little furball with me and let her meet your new furball
