How should I transport 2 handguns in a pickup truck to get to the range? I don't have a storage box in the bed. I just took the class so I'm prob at least 3 months before my conceal carry permit gets to me. Didn't think to ask this question during the class.

Thinking 2 trigger locks and guns in a range bag behind me? Ammo and clips in the same bag but different compartment? Or would I be better off buying plastic carry cases that can be locked.

Completely disassemble them and store every part separate from another. Also lock up the clips in the bed of the truck and get a trailer to tow, to store the ammo in.........lol

Seriously, it's not anything to make a big deal over. Just toss your gear in a bag, throw it in the truck and go. Hell, load one up and carry it on your hip. Open carry is legal.

Maybe (open) dangle them from the rear-view mirror like the old-style pair of dice?

NC or SC?
To seriously answer this question......

There is no NC law concerning how handguns must be transported in vehicles. Loaded or unloaded doesn't matter. It is a matter of concealment and accessibility only. NC is an open carry state. Carrying concealed you have to have the permit. If the handgun is accessible it needs to be in the open. If an LEO determines it's accessible and concealed without a permit, you could face a charge. Example, the firearm is in the center console beside you, it could be considered concealed and accessible. In the box behind a rearward seat it's concealed but not accessible, as long as no one is back there. Beside you in the open is accessible but not concealed, perfectly legal.

In SC simply have it in the Glove box or center console. SC is not an open carry state.

This was real helpful, thanks. Definition of accessibility was causing me problems.

In plain view and/or not readily accessible. What isnt explicit prohibited is allowed. If you happened to get pulled over, I wouldnt shout out "i have a gun" right away.

As far as open carry being provocative....not really. Especially if going to the range, or hunting. Even that is allowed in SC......

Little girls wear clips. Seriously, use a cable lock and avoid trigger locks.

There is no exact definition in the law that bans carrying concealed handguns. It's completely officer discretion if it's concealed and easily and readily accessible.

My opinion of open carry in public while legal is its provocative.

Would appreciate some serious replies that won't get me in trouble if I am stopped for a traffic violation. Once I get my cch I won't have this headache.

Believe me...

You have received some.

I keep my EDC loaded & accessible, but, of course, I have my CCW. For all other handguns, when I'm going to the range (or some such place), I put my unloaded pistols and /or revolvers in soft or hard cases (depending on which & how many I'm bringing). I'll put 2-3 handguns in my range bag, as well as usually empty mags, and boxed ammo and cleaning & servicing stuff.

I defer to range and safety rules: no loaded firearms behind the firing line. So, other than my EDC, which most ranges are fine with (if not, I'll unload before I go in), my firearms are unloaded until I get to the firing line. As far as storing guns & ammo close to each other and unsecured and all that? That's why I don't live in CA, MD, NY, NJ, etc. :)

So far, it's not been a problem with ranges, range officers, or LEOs.

GATTTOTP does not apply to legally open carrying a gun, other than some folks want to scare people with it. That charge is generally used for people acting stupid with a gun, not just carrying one on the hip. NC has court precedence saying OC is not GATTTOTP.

In a bag or "box" behind the seat is concealed. Must be inaccessible to all in the vehicle or locked away. Gun bag with zippers and a lock thru the zipper is locked away. A plastic pistol case with a lock is locked away. Due to the muddiness and or outright stupidity of how the NC General statutes are written, a pistol laying in plain view on the seat next to you is legal. Not advisable but legal. Also, once you have your CCP it only applies to you. If a pistol is concealed in the vehicle and accessible to a passenger who does not have a CCP, you both may have a problem. Note that in NC a CCP only applies to handguns. Long guns must always be in plain view, locked away or inaccessible.

I had to look it up

"going armed to the terror of the people"

Good. Now Look up State vs Huntley

"The citizen is at perfect liberty to carry his gun. It is the wicked purpose, and the mischievous result, which essentially constitute the crime" that is GATTOP.

If you arent carry your gun in the car, on a public road, perhaps during a road rage incident or protest (like Charlotte last year) for the purpose of terrifying or alarming then youre not GATTOP.

Its a crap law.

I wish NC had a concealed ass law. Im about tiring of seeing sagging pants and peoples bare asses. It offends me.
Sounds good on the surface, but wouldn't that mean that a permit would be necessary to OCA?

If one needed a permit to show his ass, we'd have to shut the site down! :)

For what you described this. Get a cheap 3 or 4 number luggage lock and use it. Put the bag on the rear passenger side (or passenger side if your have a single cab) farthest from your reach. IF you are stopped just act calm and normally. Since they would be unloaded, locked up and out of reach you are fine and do not need to even inform the LEO unless asked directly. Now that is for LEO interaction ... for scumbag thugs try not to stop and leave your vehicle unattended or smash and grabs are possible. Sure stop and fill up with gas, pull through the drive thru for a burger but DO NOT go for lunch and leave 'em in an area where hood rats can see a bag (they think camera, gun or other stuff of value) for a smash and grab theft.

Even when you get your CHP, do the same thing. If I am stopped I show my CHP and say I am exercising my right ... never say gun, firearm, etc. I only mention what I am carrying not what is UNLOADED and SECURELY LOCKED in my TruckVault in the back. If asked if there are any others I will say yes but they are unloaded and secured in the back. Never listed out what is back there. 99.44% of the time LEOs once you have informed and presented your CHP and ID aren't looking to nitpick things (unless you are behind enemy lines like D.C., MD, NJ, etc) so don't sweat it.

Holy hell. Please!

We went to cabelas out in garner and decided to hit city bbq. As we pulled up, there was a fellow almost wearing sweat pants just above his knees and only boxers covering his ass and getting crap out of his car. I looked at the wife and said hold on... she asked why, I said just wait... he proceeds to get his uniform out of the car and go into city bbq to go to work.

Smithfield's was good

Those are the times a few paintballs/rapid-fire airsoft BBs in the ass should be considered community service.
