Put 'em on the grill long enough for the shells to crack open. Take 'em off, pry them open, enjoy. I little cocktail sauce is always good.

What do I do with the toes?
They ain't got no toes.

This is going to sound really weird but a friend who lived at the beach told me he threw them in the dish washer (no soap!!). Said it cleaned them and heated them up just enough to make 'em grin so that you could get the shucker knife in the shell.

Damit boy, your on a roll tonight! I like it.
That's funny rite there.

It's been a long time, but here is what I suggest.

scrub with a stiff brush under cold water.

mix up a bucket of salt water (I forget how much salt, something like 80% the salt concentration in ocean water.

add oysters and a 1/2 cup of white corn meal to the bucket, stirring it all up.

put bucket in fridge.

change water in 3 hours dumping out any sand and adding more corn meal. (The oysters will suck up the corn meal and spit out the sand, so they won't be gritty).

roast on grill. Moderate heat. When they open up eat them.

you can try them raw, but using a shucking knife is a learned skill and going it alone will be frustrating.

good luck, and enjoy!

I busted my first oysters open with a coke bottle, and a flat blade screwdriver, you don't have to be all upidy about it.;)

Do Not, put them in a microwave on a plate on hi for 2 minutes.
They will expel there self from there shell, all over every sq inch.
At high velocity. Ask me how I know this.

You get a heavy bladed knife, pry the shells apart and have at it.

Always remember a splash of Tobasco sauce never hurt anything.

or you can do it like fieldgrade said, either way, oysters are yummy.

So many options, so little time. Raw is great if you can get use to them cold and slick. Some people do not like them that way. I frequently just put them on my charcoal grill until they are hot and open. You can keep them on a little longer if you like them dried out a bit more. They will burn if you are not careful. We frequently just put them in a pan in a hot oven until they are open and done to our liking. Now I usually put them in a covered pan with a little water and put them on my gas grill to steam. I save a few to fry for my better half.

I suggest that you wash off the dirt before you cook them. I just hose them down and don't use a brush. I also suggest that you tap the shells to see if you hear any that sound hollow. You don't want to cook the dead ones.

My experience has been that the more familiar people become with eating oysters out of the shell the less they want them cooked.

I don't think my dishwasher would appreciate me trying to stuff oysters in her hooha.
dohhhhhhhh

Wash off with a hose, grill till they crack open slightly. Open and eat with a mix of horseradish and cocktail and maybe a drop of fresh squeezed lime juice.
chase with an IPA or a jalapeño pale ale. Heaven. This might be how I celebrate my birthday each year.......enjoy!

Yeah, raw! All you need is one and a string! Tie string to oyster, dose with hot sauce, swallow. Pull up, repeat. You can eat all day! Nasty!!!!!!

Yummy and oysters don't go together...ever!

Main idea with oysters, or most any seafood, is dont overcook them. Steam or roast them just til they barely crack open, then get them off the heat. Put the more curved shell in the palm of your weak hand, pry at the hinge with a good sturdy oyster knife, dont spill the likker out of the shell when you open it up, thats natures salt. Delish.

It looked like a dinosaur sneezed in the microwave.
Not good.

Can't say I've ever seen a dinosaur sneeze, but according to my imagination it's quite voluminous and messy.

Oysters are absolutely tremendous. Better? ;)

If you don't like them raw, they are wonderful fried. Rinse in warm water, removw from shell, put into egg wash. Mix flour with seasoning of your choice. Old bay and cayenne is good. Put oyster, into flour then back into egg wash, then back into flour and fry. They are awesome this way.

So oysters need to be/can be cleaned out like a cooter? Interesting.

Hose them off in your driveway to clean off the mud, then roast them in a pan over your grill with a wet burlap sack over them. You can add just a little water in the bottom too, and as soon as they crack open pull them off. Pry open with a shucking knife and eat with a little horseradish, cocktail sauce or green Tabasco. Plus some Saltines and the beer of your choice. Just add angels, cause you have gone to heaven.

Oh yeah, if you have a full sack that's a bunch of oysters. You might want to invite a few friends over. Just sayin...

Scrub them down real good with cold water and a brush just to knock the dirt off them. Get you a shuckin knife a start popping them open. I like a little butter and some horseradish on mine.

Can't believe no one in this crowd has mentioned oyster stew. . . .
Agreed. We had some last week. Awesome stuff at our home. We used to serve it with Oysterette crackers before we tried our oyster stew with Ritz crackers. You won't believe how good this is with Ritz until you try it.

This

First of all if they came from a grocery store they should already be cleaned. If you have a broiling pan for your oven put a little water say 1/2 inch deep in it and place like sized oysters on the grate. Wet a kitchen towel and cover them with towel. Place in a preheated 400 degree oven. If you listen closely you will hear them popping . take them out as soon as the pop don't want to over cook them. shuck them dip in drawn butter and cocktail sauce Place on cracker or not and eat them . My mouth is watering just thinking about them. I grew up on oysters, my grandfather owned and operated a oyster bar. With out a steam boiler this is as close as you can get

I've tried several purpose made oyster knives. Best thing I've found to open one is the stubby flat blade screwdriver, the one about 1" long. Pops them open every time if you know what you are doing.
I'll take them raw, steamed, stewed, Oysters Rockefeller is wife's favorite. Just don't try me on no fried oysters. Yes there is a story there, but it's not for this thread.
