Lucky bastad gets clay dirt.
I've literally, driven hundreds of ground rods...most by hand.
I need to introduce this boy to some good old fashioned mountain rocks and roots.

Oh and another thing.
He ain't done. NEC requires the entire 8 feet to be buried.

You probably use one of these?

For the occasional need of a ground rod, this is not justifiable for most people. I've done many with a bottle of water, fence post driver and small sledge.

You won't wash one down anywhere near Mount Pisgah.

I need to drive a few more rods this week. I'll give it a try but will have my small sledge handy!

My JoCo Rocks and clay laughs at this idea! If you had to piston that 8' ground rod out back you'd look like Popeye by the time you'd be done.

About a year ago, a coworker and i put in a temporary power pole for the pottery shop construction site at our property in Chatham County. The previous electrician had placed a ground rod where the temporary power pole went and we decided to assume that he put in a full 8' one instead of just a short one. Digging a 4' post hole through that "stuff" for the panel was more than enough work.

I do now! lol
They spoil you and you have no desire to use the sledge ever again.
If there's no power around, I'll take my little Honda generator to run the hammer drill.
I've come to pretty much hate ground rods.
