Howdy From the Livermush Redoubt

cc: @NCLivingBrit

The original Overmountain Men came down from the Watauga River area of what is now Eastern TN (very near present day Boone), and made their introductions to some Redcoats at King's Mountain and then again at Cowpens. Many say that this was THE turning point in a war that wasn't going quite swimmingly for the Continental Army.

I do not know this Newbury, but will buy him a drink too. You can PM me location of the porch.
I fish up near Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga where most of the Over Mountain Men came from. They came down close to present day 19E, past my cabin, through Newland and Morganton, down Hwy 64 to Rutherfordton and Forest City to get to Kings Mountain. I'm up and down that route every week. Do you live along that route?

Welcome to the forum! :)

Not quite, but not far either. I ride a mountain bike on part of what is now called the Overmountain Victory Trail, a couple times a week. I've fished the Watauga a good bit, but it's been a while.

@Hammer21b is your cabin on the Toe? That river busted me up pretty good once...need to get back there.
Nope. I've got a camper not far from the Toe. I float it and fish for smallies. My place is in Carter County. Just off 19E.

The pizza joint across from the entrance of the college has livermush on a pizza.
Assuming you meant GW, I was ready for a road-trip to Boiling Springs. But, alas, I couldn't find any interwebz confirmation. You pullin' a feller's leg?

mmm..... Red Bridges BBQ. I also like the Flying Pig BBQ across from the airport on 150. Shelby's downtown is turning out quite nice. Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille if you like local brews and unique pizzas is also worth stopping at.

My son confirms they have it, right there on the corner of 150 and S Main

Hunter's livermush is a local favorite. I can't personally say that it's the best, because in my limited experience (67 years) I have never found a reason to try any other brand.

I like Hunter's, but generally prefer Jenkin's. I wonder if y'all's Hunter's preference is a UNC-Raleigh thing.

IDK, if a UNC-Raleigh thing.

It's the only thing close enough to what we used to make growing up.
I'll eat Jenkins if I can't get Hunter's, but no idea about the location thing...

In my case, I grew up in McDowell county where Hunter's is made, and it was the only livermush, other than home made, we ever had. It may have been my first solid food, but I'm not certain of that. ;) I doubt that Hunter's is even sold as far east as Raleigh.

It isn't.

When I went to teh far western part of NC for work while at NCDOT, we'd always stop by the Ingles in Marion and I'd buy 3 of teh largest packs I could get.
Come home, fry/eat some, then fry the rest up and freeze it.

Trick to that is to not fry it up all crispy like you would if you'd be eating right then.
That way, when you thawed it, fry it up crisp and just like fresh.

Reminds me I need to make a trip to Marion this fall for more. :)

I go to visit my parents every couple of weeks. If you plan to be in the Winston-Salem area let me know and I can have some waiting for you here, and save you 200 miles of driving.

Do not over cook livermush. How in the he77 are you going to mix yer eggs up with ur livermush? Get it hot and get it out of the pan. Get three eggs fried with the yolk runny. Take and mix eggs.and livermush on the plate. Salt and.pepper to taste. Have plenty of toast and milk ready. Comsume mix and the.sop the reamins up with some toast. Sit back and find a nice place to nap. Enjoy.

Grits...where did you read I overcooked my 'mush?

I know how the heck to fix 'mush to MY liking, so no need for you to try and "inform" me. :)

And, my eggs, grits, & 'mush are NEVER mixed.
GROSS.
Where the heck did you grow up? In the Forest City/Shelby area???

My ex would do that.
Gross.

:)

When you said crisp. Its in the quote.

And you been reading my profile. Didn't you?

I grew up from Key West, north to Newport RI, west to Chicago and places in between.

I've been involved in bootlegging livermush as away as South Dakota.

So.

Nothing wrong doing what mixing your stomach is going to do anyway.

Eggs and mush is a mighty fine meal. One I would consider if i was faced with a last meal choice

A MushMcMuffin is one of my favorite ways to eat Livermush. Cheesy greatness. The Princess is from Florida, and does not approve.
