I'm in need of a hunting rifle. Will be a bolt gun with a max budget of $400. I hunt from a blind alot so I'm looking for a compact rifle. I found the Remington 783 with a 16.5in barrel in 6.5 creedmoor. I think it would make a good hunting rifle and I could play with it when I go to the 600yd range. But the main reason is hunting. I was looking at a savage axis but they don't make one like the 783. The axis I was looking at is in SS but it has a 22 inch barrel. The reviews seem good on the 783 for a lower end hunting rifle ( what I'm looking at). Any others I should look at? Thanks

I bought a Savage 340 30-30 with vintage peep sight for $350 a couple of months ago. It's one of the best Hunting Bolt Gun (Cheap) options out there!

a 16.5in barrel in 6.5 creedmoor.

For hunting, this is a great barrel length in 6.5CM. You only lose about 150fps and 0.1Mil @ 100yds compared to a 22" barrel.

Ive got a brand new Mossburg Patriot in 300WM that I'll let go for 300 obo

The Remington 783 is a rebranded Marlin XL7/XS7 which uses the Savage barrel nut so you can change barrels/calibers easy enough at home and are GTG. Cerberus couldn't have Marlin producing a better rifle then Remington could. Do NOT buy a Remington 770 POS. They are very cheaply and crappy made. The Ruger American, Savage Axis and Mossberg Patriot are all decent budget guns too.

That's good to know. I really liked the marlin rifles but never did get one. I think I'm going with the 783 because it is the barrel length I want, the caliber( 6.5) and it does have good reviews. I will be ordering it today. I will also be getting a DNZ single peice mount for it.

The 783 that I had for just a couple of days 2 years ago wouldn’t feed rounds worth a crap. There isn’t much that is more annoying than cycling a bolt just to hear a “click.”

Well the rifle has been ordered, should be here next week. I got the Remington 783. I have a DNZ one peice scope mount cominng for it ( brand new on fle bay for $35 shipped), found a sling, a adjustable cheek rest, and a simple muzzle brake in my "junk box". I also picked up a few boxes of hunting ammo to try out and 2 boxes of the hornady black box with the 140gr BTHP to see if it will group better than min of deer :)

Oh and some paint because it will be getting camo :) :)

Here she is. Picked her up today. Added a cheek rest, a small muzzle brake, DNZ one peice mount and my hawke 4x12x50 scope. I hope to get to the rifle range Monday to see what she will do. So far I really like the feel, length and weight. If she performs good she will get a camo job :)

Please give a range report on that. Now that I secret love affair with 6.5cm I’m looking at that exact rifle for a light weight, short woods gun for next hunting season.
