My fiancé and I are thinking about taking a quick trip to do some fishing at the coast in the next week or two. What kind of effects would the hurricane have on in shore fishing. Also talking with a guy at work today he mentioned it not being a good idea to eat any fish caught. He said it wouldn’t be healthy with all the run off and mess getting in the water from the storm. Is there any truth to this. Thanks in advance.

Here’s a little after effect of Florence that is not being spoke about much. Check the runoff pollution entering the Atlantic from the various rivers and creeks ...

I’m not to sure I’d be fishing for a little while more. Florence cause a pretty fair “dump” into the Atlantic. The oyster, crab and shrimp business is really going to feel it on our coast ... while most is silt and sediment there is a high fecal count from major runs like from the Neuse and Cape Fear. The Outer Banks surf fishing is much cleaner but from Cape Lookout south I’d be careful.

ETA: here’s the story with the above image and narrative

Duke had a coal ash dam failure on the Cape Fear, hearing something like 2 years of poison fish from that. I do not know how big of an area that effects.

Some of the flooded farm land around here is out of commission for a while due to sewage and chemical contamination. all that runoff is down stream now.

Saw a news report that some of the beaches have now tested OK for water safety but Intracoastal still has insane levels of poop.

I ain't going back in the water until late next spring,

I'd have to agree with @NCFubar and say the water is not in your favor right now and probably won't be for a month or more. Why not modify your plan and go off shore where conditions are more favorable.....

THOUSANDS of dead fish on the highways here!!!! Not to mention run off from giant hog and chicken business. Nasty.

Just pick 'em up. Don't even have to get your feet wet.

I would like to take an off shore trip eventually, but budget and work schedules make that hard to do. And besides that we like to fish out of kayaks and aren’t quite ready for the open ocean yet. Have a little more gear to buy first. From what I’ve seen here it doesn’t look like an in shore trip is a good idea right now.

If Florence hadn't screwed it up an inshore trip would have been right up your alley.... Give it time, it'll come back...

Come to Charleston, the fishing has been great.
