Hurricane Florence predictions

Some high schools are being used as shelters and I would imagine that they will still be in use come Monday?
I didnt think of that, thank you.

Without any significant wind at the time, a neighbor's tree broke and fell on the roof of his house. There were periodic sharp popping and cracking sounds for about 30 minutes; I'm guessing that might have been pieces in his roof breaking.

Few gusts here and there in Mooresville.

Duke dropped the lake a good 12+ inches in preparation.

Didnt help much. The wind is still blowing it over the dam at McGuire

We're finally getting some of the effects from Flo in N. High Point. Started a couple of hours ago.

Watching the bands of rain and high wind come in off and on reminds me of how insignificant myself and every single other human being on the planet is compared to Mother Nature.

You have to ask yourself: Am I a threat to her?

Does anyone have a good link to a decent tracker?

I know I could look, but one medium rare NY strip, one roasted habanero, and about seven beers into this evening, my google-fu is weak.

Scotland co

I've been running downed tree calls all day with the FD, we just got grounded due to wind conditions. The rain isn't bad yet but getting some violent gusts.

The generator is leaking oil from somewhere, but not bad, and I can't tell where it's leaking, so I'll just keep a check on the oil level whenever we run it, and then see if I can figure it out after the storm has passed.

Power is still out. But I went and picked up a pizza. :)
Hooked up a bigger power inverter so the kids can watch TV, as they were getting restless using just laptop screens.
Figured out the oil leak on the generator – it was pouring out where the governor shaft goes into the crank case. Looked online and someone suggested clogged crankcase vent. Pulled off the rubber vent tube and blew through it, and something shot out. Doesn't seem to be leaking oil anymore!

It's amazing how a clogged little vent tube can cause so many problems. Glad you got her fixed Richard.:)

Predictions? Hmmm, civil unrest and riots due to no power, no stores open, no banks open, no gas, no food, no fast food, no water, no ebt cards. Mother Nature doesn't care about rights or entitlements. She will make it real serious real quick. Prepare, sit back and watch the show. Stay safe.

What are they saying about the roads? I don't know when I can return home...or which way I should go: I40 or thru SC I26, I-20, I95, 74-76

Just had a friend comment on fb he went from statesville back to wilmington tonight down 40 with no issues but be prepared for power to be out in wilmington as it was pretty bad and be a while without it.

Thanks man!

Power still out here. Running the generator to let the fridge cool back down. Hated to start it up for all the noise, but it didn't wake up the girls. :)

Weird that power is still out here - nothing really going on in terms of weather. My wife was told that the power company can't work on the issue if it's raining. Is that true? If so, no issues if they need to be safe. It would just help set our expectations for when they might get it fixed.

Since ours seems to be the only area around here without power, if it is not back on by mid morning, we'll go get some breakfast and try to find something to do away from the house. First-world problems. :)

Prayers for all those who actually have it rough form this storm!

Storm is spinning over Georgetown but the wind gust and rain are still here in Wilmington. Last word I got was 74/76 west of Leland was blocked with trees and debris. 133 from Belville south was blocked as well.

The Duke Energy website doesn't even identify specific outages now as it did yesterday. It just has all of Wake county grayed out and lists 29,000 without power. Yesterday you could see which specific areas were without power. This link works better on a computer than it does on my iPhone SE.

Reports on the local radio this morning have I40 flooded in both direction around the Warsaw area. Have a back up plan or two if you are going somewhere, especially if the route takes you anywhere near a river.

Just heard that as well from my buddy. @DirtySCREW might want to double check before you head out.

Never had to Wade in thigh high water in my driveway before. Never seen this much water in my little area of onslow before. Watching coast guard rescue chopper fly by.

If you have a boat bring ice...

Nothing to report here yet, the occasional breeze and mist. I talked to a friend of mine in St. Pauls last night and he said they hadn't floated away yet but the surfing was good.

Hoke county. Lost power for about 20 hours. Had some strong winds and rain but the power came back on about an hour ago and the winds have calmed significantly. Just a steady rain. No flooding that I can see and the local roads looked decent when I went to check on a buddy.

A couple pieces of my drip-edge came off yesterday during the peak winds and some shrubs are leaning pretty hard. One neighbor had a medium sized tree come down on her sunroom and across the street lost quite a few shingles.

Getting the wind a-bit now, and drizzles. Moving in.
The 'eye' is supposed to pass right over us. Polk County Mountains.
Our problems are that we've had record rainfall this year and everything is absolutely already soaked. Rivers way up. lakes topped out etc. Lower Polk county has been through hell this year with the water. They've got that World Equestrian Games going on right now too. Horses from all over the world and sold 250,000 tickets.
I'm not a horse guy but I feel for them. That's just SFL right there.

The trees. We got lots of trees. The roots are swamped out already and 5-10" of rain and some wind will be an issue. My power lines do not run up the road, they run through the woods. If a tree falls on them you don't just drive up and fix it. Power still on but I expect to lose it at around early dark-thirty this morning.
Landslides and valley flooding will be a real problem. The water here does not just rise up and flood your garage, it comes down a raging river and takes your house with it. That's happened here quite a-bit.

My wife was told that the power company can't work on the issue if it's raining. Is that true? If so, no issues if they need to be safe.
I suppose that different areas might play different, but generally no. Those guys will work in just about anything if it's something that can be repaired with field equipment, and they get real inventive. The one condition that will keep them on the ground is lightning. Up in a bucket during a lightning storm? Um, no.
I give linemen the same credit I do firemen and such. They work in conditions no-one else does and with some extremely dangerous stuff.

Was that the attack of a land shark?

Sounded like he wanted to say "We were taking on sniper fire"

Doesn't WRAL itself advocate calling 911 and finding a safe space? Oh, wait, they DID call the cops and received, to paraphrase, the you're on your own response. Somehow, however, I don't think I'm going to be reading a "reconsideration" opinion on WRAL any time soon. 5.56 first, then 911.

Pretty sure that's why some folks stay and ride out the storm....for fear of some thieving, no-good, POS miscreant(s) waltzing in and stealing what they've worked hard for.

Drop the first one and I'd bet the rest would scatter like a buncha cockroaches when the lights come on.

Watched the video...shame there wasn't an Eastern rattler or cottonmouth slithering round in there...they'd of shagged ass outta there, right through the brick wall like the Kool-Aid dude....but instead of hollering, "OH YEAH!!!" they'd of been screaming, "GOT DAMN!"
