Hurricane Florence predictions

Lost power at o0:24 hrs managed to sleep in til o5:45
Power still out. Time to pull the ice chests and keep the milk and stuff cold...

Got some pretty good gusts last night around 10 and some this morning, heavy rain
I cant see any downed trees from my house, which is good, that's what I worried about most - all this rain plus some heavy winds blowing a tree over and losing power

Constant heavy rain right now, but we still have power.

The biggest issue at the moment is the septic system is useless.

I’m having issues also with septic now. Back yard is flooded, good 3-4” standing over my septic lines.

I want to get back home. I don’t know when the roads will be opened up again. I can only get to about 40 miles away from either NC roads or SC roads from what google maps is telling me. I call my dad everyday checking on him. He’s run out of gas for his generator...and it was acting up right before it ran out. He thinks he needs a new carb. My in laws have trees down everywhere. I want to get home to help cleanup and get life back to normal.

I did buy a Stihl MS271 Farm Boss while I’m up here. Figured I could cut anything in my way when I do go home, plus have a lot of cleanup to do. Also figured there would be a run on saws when I got back too.

Guess I just need reassurance that I did the right thing. Just sucks not being there protecting what you’ve worked your entire life for. I know it can be replaced. I’ve been texting @Johnny too making sure he’s ok. Just sucks being so far from home and my hands are tied. Just have to trust in the Lord.

Your safe and your folks are safe. The rest can be sorted out when stuff settles down some. No need to get hurt trying to get back. You made the right choice.

Up until a few hours ago the municipal water plant was saying they were going to have to shut down in 48 hours due to critical fuel shortage, until they said they secured fuel an hour later. Scared the crap out of me for my family and everyone else down there.

A lot of folks don’t realize how much crap goes into our daily comfort
So many things people take for granted, power, water, groceries at the grocery store. It takes a lot of infrastructure and it's not as robust as people think.

Catastrophic flooding in Scotland co, got to be a record.

National guard and other counties sending high water rescue teams.

Supply chains are a fragile thing. Even right here in The Containment Area (Cary) our power never went out, no flooding, and yet the Food Lion near us hasn't had a truck in several days. Shelves are pretty empty from the panic buying last week.

Septic tank issues suck. 5 gallon bucket with a pool noodle draped on the edges and a Walmart bag to catch the fun. Just pretend you are camping and having fun.

The average store has approximately 3 days stock of food under normal circumstances. NYC has 1 day. Every day New York City depletes it stock of food and every night, 10,000 trucks (real approximation) roll in and re-stock it.
The human factor is a big variable in systems continuity. Who comes to drive the trucks when the drivers neighborhoods have been leveled by a tornado and they have to take care of their families? Who opens the banks and gas stations when there is a flu epidemic and everyone is sick? The money is there, the gas is there, but there is no way to access it. (This happened in England a few years back.)

I think I read somewhere we are always about 3 days from becoming Venezuela. We just need some bad luck and/or stupidity.

Politics over the rule of law.

The forgiven looting in Wilmington, that is.

Give it time till the complaints about "there's no stores left open in our neighborhood" begin.

Give it time till the complaints about "there's no stores left open in our neighborhood" begin.

And that will carry over, "There's no place in my neighborhood to buy groceries or to work"
Having spent 35+ years in affordable housing I've heard that so many times I've got to where I just ignore it. They loot and rob the stores within their neighborhood and then wonder why they aren't rebuilt afterwards, how stupid can you be??

I would be willing to bet the farm that particular Family Dollar had closing on their minds for a while and this was the perfect opportunity to achieve 100% inventory liquidation, perfect....for them. Tough titty for the neighborhood....

Just saw that a previously closed section of I-95 in SC has been reopened. Still sections of I-95 in NC that are closed - I assume all the closed areas of I-95 are south of Rocky Mt, but does anyone have more info on this?

Pretty sure that's why some folks stay and ride out the storm....for fear of some thieving, no-good, POS miscreant(s) waltzing in and stealing what they've worked hard for.

Drop the first one and I'd bet the rest would scatter like a buncha cockroaches when the lights come on.

Watched the video...shame there wasn't an Eastern rattler or cottonmouth slithering round in there...they'd of shagged ass outta there, right through the brick wall like the Kool-Aid dude....but instead of hollering, "OH YEAH!!!" they'd of been screaming, "GOT DAMN!"
You have no idea how much this pisses me off. Down East got hit hard as hell and is in shambles but there have been no legitimate reports of looting. The entire area has been ignored by the media and most of the major relief organizations.

Maps.google.com is showing I95 closed starting at US 64 in Rocky Mount down to Dunn and then a lot of sporadic closures to Florence. It's also showing 40 closed as well as sections of other roads.

Fingers crossed roads will open and I can return to Wilmington.

Fingers crossed that when you do get home things are much better than you're probably expecting....

Consider swinging by Wal Mart and picking up a Gazeteer and run back roads...But be careful...

Yay, just got quoted $6-800 to fix some water damage from a leak in my chimney that I fixed a few years back. Guess the sheer amount of water that came down overpowered the fix. Have done fence posts that need replacing anyway, so why not add a couple hundo there since I’ll be spending almost a grand anyway...

I95 is closed from Dunn to Fayetteville (roughly exit 73 to 58), just like last time due to flooding and Rhodes Pond dam break, which BTW was never fixed.

Keep road updates coming.

My dad was telling me he heard people getting to Wilmington by way of 701 to 421. But I don't know... Google maps shows a lot of closed roads

My nephew is trying to make it back to Wilmington now, something like 111 south to 24 east, after that I’m not sure what they are doing. He and my BIL mapped out some kind of strategy. If they make it I’ll pass along the route.

I’ve heard of some roads that are passable during low tide but not during high. Don’t know if that applies to their route.

Haven’t been too worried about studying maps, still without power. Came on last night for 4 hrs and went off again. Estimated to be out til midnight tonight. At least it was on long enough to cool the house off for sleeping.

I've been told they aren't letting people in or out if Wilmington....

I'm going to stay put for a few more days probably, since the Cape Fear river is suppose to crest today.

Please keep me updated though.

Thought I might be able to hit Myrtle Beach and head up 17...but it's got closures on it too.

:(

Haven’t heard about not letting anyone come or go. I’ll keep you updated.

WECT reported yesterday the DOT had a route to get supplies in that they said they wanted to keep on the "down low" and weren't announcing it, but that if someone found there way to it they wouldn't stop them. It was unknown as to whether cresting rivers or tides would impact that route.

As of last night my son and his roommate were the only ones in his whole apt complex. He said the power came on to every building in there but his. He texted me a few F bombs about it.

My nephew just made it back. The route he took was posted to Facebook by Annette Warner in the WECT communities section.

Not sure how FB works but I can text anyone a screenshot of the route if you can’t find it in FB. I’m having trouble uploading images or I would post it here.

I’ve heard 421 was flooded but that could easily change.
