I'll be honest with you. What with COVID, BLM, ANTIFA, wildfires, cop murders and all, about the last thing I have any headspace for are hurricanes hitting somewhere not named "North Carolina." That said, I have a bunch of family on the gulf coast of Mississippi--Biloxi, Long Beach, Pass Christian, Gulfport. Praying for safety for them, and everyone down there!

Hurricane Sally is not big, but it is slow, and they are predicting 30" of rain in some areas and the flooding has a potential to be catastrophic.

Flooding of 8ft could happen in some areas. They also can't use the standard shelters because of COVID. There is no where for people to go.

Seems like you never win with hurricanes. If they're fast, they're major. If they're minor, they're slow and dump a ton of water.

They are getting hammered, and it's going to get worse.

I was in Pensacola in the Navy in August-September 2004 for officer school, got out a week before Ivan. I can't imagine being there during a major storm. One reason they BRAC'd a lot of those schools; they just didn't want to rebuild.

Yeah it's going to be wet for sure. I've heard estimates of 14 inches or more over a period of just a day or two. That will crest every river and flood all low lying areas. Anyone near a river or in a low lying area is an idiot if they don't evacuate. This could be a much higher death toll than a category 5.

That's a nice area. Probably a wee bit damp now. I hope your sister is OK!

Yeah. My family had a beach house down there when I was in college. (my dad was a telephone co lineman and we didn't have any real money until I was in HS. He began speculating in Real Estate and did quite well, so I knew what it was like to grow up "in both worlds"... though we only came into any money my second senior year in HS... that is a long story in itself, so I will pass)

It was far far far less developed than the outer banks at the time. Only one restaurant to go to, and it was a bubba's diner kind of place. It was nice. I understand it is almost completely commercialized now, and land prices have skyrocketed all the way into Foley..., which was only known as the birthplace of Kenny Stabler back then!

That is true of almost all waterfront property now, regardless of location. My wife and I just had this conversation; one of our neighbors, an older, retired couple, own a place near Myrtle Beach. We notice how many 'older' people own property on or near the coast, and that is because they bought it back when it was affordable.

I love the gulf coast of the Florida panhandle, Alabama, and Mississippi. Fond memories of childhood trips.

My bff reports lots of storm action in her area of FL, the houses around hers are losing shingles, but hers is ok. They have a stay home order in place.

North Carolina Weather Authority, one of the better sites, said there is a pretty good chance of flooding in parts of NC, and tonight areas can get up to 6"-7" of rain.

My old lady just got home from Key West. She was there when it hit over the weekend. Nothing serious there. Lost power in the hotel for an hour. The gulf coast may be a different story...

Asheboro got 1.5 inches today... not the 3-7 they predicted.
