Husqvarna or Stihl question...

A 40cc like the 435 is everything you'll need.

You're probably absu-friggin-lutley correct on that. I have a Poulan Pro 16" that my wife bought me in 2000. Had to change out the fuel lines and now the gas cap is wiggy. It won't fit correct and needs to be torqued a lot to seal. A few things wrong now with it. Won't run more than 30min, after 5min it gets so you have to watch or it stalls.

I have an electric for real light cutting. Great but you're on the cord. Battery ones are not worth the $ to me.

Just looking for the best deal without going the $100 big box saws.

For what it's worth, I've been researching this myself.

I'm in the camp with several who've listed the Stihl MS391 (top end of "Farm and Ranch") or MS261 (low end of "Pro" saws.

I currently have a homeowner saw (Stihl MS250) and my primary focus/goal is the ability to run a 25" bar --- if I need it. My mother-in-law has property with some fairly big stuff, much too much for my 250, and a 20" bar in the 3.5 hp range is really the minimum I should be using when we visit.

Would like to add at least a used MS311 or 391 (preferably) or used Husky 455 or 545 but really trying not to spend the cash right now...in lieu of selling, I'm hunting for a trade on a good used saw for a Rem 870 I have.

Had you posted this earlier in the week. I just sold a 391

I have a Husqvarna 455 and love it, it leaks bar oil like crazy, but starts everytime and has been rock solid through several hurricane cleanups and tree cuttings around the property
I have this same 455 Rancher saw. Not a lot of heavy cutting but it works great every time I need it.

Also still got a Pulon Pro Wild Thang Green and Purple. it's was from when they first started selling them. Maybe 20 years ago. Still runs but the choke always pops off so I have to take the cover off and put it back on.

now questioning replacement for husqvarna 55 saw (older one. serial plate (1997) 741xxxx)

Today's attempt to crank after a while of sitting.... (usually 8-12 pulls with full choke and compression release) was a no-go...
once it seemed to 'hit' and liked to jerked my arm off... compression release not releasing...
pulled the assembly and cleaned it with solvent.
helped some, but on one pull where release did not release i heard a 'sproing'.. and starter rope felt funny...
looked inside could see spring.

took cover off and the post molded into the cover was still on pulley, broken from cover......

I have found replacement cover assembly, and a new compression release valve.... but still thinking about replacement with a Stihl...
it is just an older saw... and i am older too... wears me out.... but nothing like the P42 pioneer with 24"bar....

well update and advice to others...
do not F around with the cheep replacement covers... amazon OR ebay...

first purchase, seller refunded $$ and reported damaged in shipment ( I never received)...
went to different vendor on amazon, just few $ more ( dealing sub $20 examples)
I did receive this one.
Looked good, but the retaining holes would not line up... and if attempted placed cover in a bind...

seller facilitated return and full refund. thanks!

then went the evilbay route, but refused to try any 'china' copies... went OEM this time.

price ranged from 50 to 100 bux... found one seller with decent feedback and with an item 'on sale'

did the buy it now and 64 bux later, in transit.

Received... was OEM marked packaging for Husqvarna, but stated "made in brazil'..
fitment was a-ok and it has worked thus far...

maybe the ole gal has some life left in er... (serial 1997 17xxxxxx)
