So, I picked up a Ruger MK IV a couple weeks ago. Ran a boat load of suppressed shots through and needed to give it a thorough cleaning.

What a load of dung...what's this "push a button and take it apart" procedure? What kind of voodoo are they doing there in Prescott? I feel cheated out of hours of hopping on one leg, growing a third arm and cussing like my Irish grandma. Where's my alone time in the shop trying not to throw the damn thing away as I line up the strut with the shoe and try not to pass to "GO" and open a new vortex of hell??

Kids these days just won't know how good they have it.

While walking to school in the snow up hill both ways!

I hate the new design. I have bought more than one Ruger disassemnled in a box or one that has been put back together wrong and wouldn't work. Now Ruger has ruined this for me.

Exactly

This reminds me of when I was a Novell Network Systems engineer. Novell was an early networking server software before Microsoft took over that world. Back in the day, it took about 30-60 min to install software on a server and required handling about 30 disks, some of them multiple times. It required a lot of knowledge to install correctly due to multiple parameters and any configuration errors required another 30min or so re-install loop. Then there were the detail configurations and customizations after. You usually dedicated 1/2 day to do a server. I remember the day a relatively neophyte friend of mine called talking about his simple network install with 1 CD and the push of a button. I almost hung up on him.

Mail it to me , Tim. I’ll put it back together for you 😉

I’ve read of the pre-MK IV break down struggles, and it’s the reason I bought a MK IV.

Pre MKIV break down is trivial ... it's the dance putting it back together that freaks people out. But, once you "get it" it's no big deal and one of the most reliable guns ever. My first pistol purchase ever ... MKIII 22/45 Target model and loved it. Only sold it to fully fund a new one - exact same model but when they started with the replaceable grip screws ... and I'm still loving it!

MKiii, once you do it few times, it's easy. MKiv is cheating...

I have been temped to trade my MKiii for a MKiv, but my MKiii is a good shooter, likes most ammo I shoot.

Eh, all you gotta do is take that BS magazine disconnect junk out and pop in a hammer bushing. Once you do that, the assembly on the Mark III pistols is a piece of cake.

I have a forum member bring me a gun in a box before to put back together for them. It was completely apart meaning the sear, sear spring, hammer, etc were all floating around in the box. Only thing left in the frame was the magazine release.

If ANYONE gets stuck on a Mark III let me know. I can help you out. Likewise, if you buy a Volquartsen accurizing kit or something for a Mark III or Mark IV I can help with that too. Though I will say that once you get past field stripping the Mark IV, they are actually a bit more difficult to detail strip and reassemble than the Mark III models.

Everybody else glossed over it ..

Your grandma has 3 arms?

if you have a MKIII and want a MUCH better trigger, get the Volquartzen MKII (not MKIII) kit. It comes with the magazine disconnect eliminating bushing.

Sure hate you having such an easy time. Swap you my Mark 3 and you can go back to enjoying the peaceful depths of pure hell once again.
BTW, mine will of course come in pieces....

I’ve considered a Volquartzen kit for both my MKIII and MKIV. Never been into one that far though so I’m hesitant.

l agree completely. Nothing like the aroma of #9 while you try to line up the doohickey with the thingamabob to properly fit right there at the jammerkatz.

The stress of getting it done is well relieved by the simple pleasure of when it all slips together in a coordinated fashion and goes boom when you want.

The new button take down is slick! but aside from cleaning I wouldn't trade my marklll 22/45 Lite for the new one.. they don’t look the same! The new ones have holes/cuts over the barrel not my cup of tea. My mark3 barrel is flutted and looks classic it’s perfect

Does the volquartsen kit for the mkII remove the magazine disconnect on the mkII as well? I presume it would but you never know....

When the wife's mkII needs cleaning I give it to our son-in-law the gunsmith.

Work smarter not harder....

Since you feel that way. As a friend, I can shoot mine more this year, get it really filthy, and for a modest fee, you can pay to come over, disassemble and clean and reassemble mine.

I bought a Standard MKIII years ago when they were still fairly new, along with a bushing to delete the magazine safety. My plan was to disassemble, install the bushing, lube, and reassemble. The frame dropped and spilled all the FCG on the floor. After getting it back together, I couldn't get the upper on because the frame/upper fit was so tight. It took King Kong whacks with a rubber mallet to finally get it seated. Then the whole fiddling with getting the hammer strut back in position which was so tight I had to use a plastic punch to knock it out to re-assemble multiple ties.

I believe I started around 10pm and finished around sunrise. I learned under no circumstance to open a pre-MKIV until you have a couple hundred rounds through it to loosen it up a bit.

First go round putting it back together was definitely a pisser! Got a pile of Rugers and live em all but that one tested my religion 😖😂😂😂

I can help with that and I'm from Caldwell County. Sometimes I go home to visit. Might be able to figure something out. Likewise, if you're in the Chatham County area you can swing by here and I can install that stuff for you. The Mark 4 is actually a little tougher than the Mark 3 in my opinion. But still something that is doable while you sit and have a Coke.

My first Ruger 22 was a Mark II Government with some scuffs that I bought for @$350. I shot it for @1 or 2 years in local steel matches and practice. I'd spray it down and run a bore snake through it occasionally. Finally decided I was going to take it apart and clean it. When I tipped it up the metal "nub" at the back that us supposed to be affixed to the lower receiver was in the top of the gun. Guy I know had been trying to buy it for a while, I sold it with extra mags and sights for $600 and went and bought a new Mark IV extra mags and a Volquartsen trigger kit from Brownells (@$125). Cue the recall. Got it back and try to get the trigger kit installed. Gunsmith won't touch it, says "I'd have to stone the sear...". Call Volquartsen. "Sure, we'll do it. @$67 and will take 1 to 2 week". I kept it for a while and shot it a good bit. Finally traded it for a special edition Ruger 10/22. Kept my mags, holsters and the trigger kit. Low and behold I walk into a local gun shop yesterday and they have a used Mark IV with some finish wear on the muzzle, box, one mag, and green fingernail polish on the front sight. $249.

"I'll take it".....

I've got a MK4 Hunter. I've shot hundreds of rounds through it. I've still never disassembled it or cleaned it.

I've never owned any other Ruger MKX...

So, what you're telling me is, "Don't buy anything before MK4, right? "

😆

Haha. Glad you got and are enjoying your MkIV. When the time comes for me to get another Ruger Mk series pistol it'll be a MkIV variant specifically for the ease of maintenance. I don't care if supposedly it's slightly less mechanically accurate or something. I barely shoot the Ruger Mk.I I was given by my grandfather and father because I know how aggravating it is to properly clean. That said, it's still a delightfully great gun to shoot, I'm just not enthused by a gun whose disassembly requires a mallet, lol.

Doing the disassembly is like a colonoscopy…don’t like it but ya just have to do it. Definitely a technique involved 😜

  • Haha
Reactions: Me.
I had a MKIII and to solve the re-assembly problem...I bought a Browning Buckmark. When I grow up I want to buy a MKIV with threaded bbl and a suppressor.

Clean your guns? You mean you don't just stick them overnight in a bowl of Balistol?
