On July 16th I was on my way home from a cruise on Shady Valley TN. I figured I would get a drive in before we traveled to Florida for a vacation. I was coming down the ‘Big Laurel“ rd and out pooped not one but two deer. One doe hit the front and rolled over the hood/windshield and onto the roof. The other hit the door/fender on the passenger side and rolled between the guardrail and quarter panel. I limped it down the road to a pull off and called the highway patrol. When he got there he admitted to having three run out in front of him on the way up to me. I had the car insured with Hagerty (never again will I use them). They wanted the car taken to CoPart in Mocksville to assess the damage.

By this time I was already in Florida. Their adjuster said the damage was $6400 damage. I knew that was way off and instructed them to send it to Modern Collision in Boone. I knew the replacement roof and labor would eat almost all of that. The CoPart tow driver left with it on the 25th. It arrived at Modern on the 28th. Nobody knew where my car was for 3 days. It gets to Modern and a buddy who works in Boone sent me a pic to show me it arrived. It had WAY more damage. Well I am pissed and ended up calling a friend of a friend and talked to him. He works at said Copart. The car was unloaded and moved around with a forklift and they accidentally hit it in the side with the forks. CoPart or their driver robbed the Shelby logo’d valve stem caps, Hurst special edition floor mats, and radar detector that was in it. I forgot the radar detector so that is on me. To beat all there was rubber in both rear wheel wells from some pretty good burnouts. I was pissed. So insurance makes me file another claim for the new damage!

Modern assesses the total damage at over $17k. Fast forward to two weeks ago when I get tired of being told that they are in negotiations with CoPart over the extra damage. They transfer me to a supervisor and She says “oh it is a total loss claim either way, the previous agent was trying to recoup their money from CoPart”. They ask me to sign and have the title notarized, and I do and send it to them like they ask. The contract I signed said upon receipt of the title we will send payment”. A week and a half later they still had not paid me. They said they were negotiating with Modern on the storage. They paid Modern, the shop manager called me and said they paid it and we have signed the release to them. You would think that would be it. Nope! Hagerty then said we have to wait until CoPart gets the car. So CoPart refuses to get the car for a few days because it is the car that they damaged and lost for a few days. Fast forward again to today when they finally release the funds.

Deer damage (not showing the roof damage) I circle the areas that were damage by CoPart. Not including the scratches on every body panel after they returned it.

tow truck operators can be shady, most are looking for anything they can do to make a few extra bucks by taking stuff off of or out of cars. It’s criminal what was done to your car and if you have any images taken right after the accident to compare to how the car was delivered to the repair facility - you may have some “ammo” to use against CoPart. At the very least I would speak to the officer that wrote the report to see if you have any legal course of action- he may even corroborate your claims

@charliedeltajuliet so sorry to hear about this!
For folks who have a similar situation in the future - if you have any plans that you might get your car fixed (rather than totaled), never let them take it to Copart. Have it taken to your house (if you are allowed to park a wrecked car there) or another location you trust. The OPs example shows what can happen at Copart - theft and damage. At least get all your stuff out of the car before it leaves your possession.
It has always been my feeling that they treat cars going to Copart like they are going to be totaled - they don’t take care of them.
When my wife’s Honda van (nowhere near as nice as that GT) was rear-ended, it was still drivable, but I figured they would total it. I already planned to get it fixed if not totaled, or buy it back and get it fixed if totaled.
We drove it home, and the insurance called and wanted to know when the tow company could come to haul it to Copart. I asked them why it needed to go there. They said since it was probably totaled. I said what if it’s not totaled, or what if I want to buy it back? I asked couldn’t they send an estimator to my house, or I could take the van to a body shop that I trust. They agreed and had an estimator come to my house.

I ended up settling with the insurance and they finally paid. They paid me the guaranteed value that was set when I started the policy.

I found the replacement near the coast, the trip was rough but it was worth it. It is a 2010 Shelby GT500 that was stock other than a cold air intake and changing to the later style wheels. With what I had my mustang value set, I bought the Shelby without having to add too much to it. But so far i am enjoying it, it is just a different world than the coyote 5.0.

Glad it worked out in the end. Sorry you had to deal with that.
Did you ask how much to buy the car back after they totaled it? Just curious what the number would’ve been. That engine would be great in a project.

Well now my Kernersville dodge story doesn’t sound quite as bad. Lol.

Sorry Chad. That sounds like no fun and the reasons places get firebombed.

While the theft and extra damage is on the dealership, you not being satisfied and taken care of is on the insurance company.

The buyback was just under $3300. I was going to buy it back but decided I just didn’t feel like messing with it. 10 years ago I would have had that coyote in a fox body or an old fairmont (as a sleeper).
