For some time I've been wanting a crossbow. No need for one, they've just always interested me. Unfortunately I'm not able to just go out in the back yard and squeeze of a few rounds with a firearm any time I feel like it so I thought a crossbow might satisfy the shooting urge when I can't get to the range. Well today I was in Field & Stream and I come across this crossbow for $150. For that price I'm thinking this might make a fun "toy". Thoughts? Anybody out there have a crossbow. Are they as fun as they look? Thanks.

My neighbor has a decent crossbow with a scope on it. I enjoy shooting it in his yard. I've thought about getting one for simply shooting targets too. And heck, it wouldn't be a bad thing to be proficient with would it? I could probably hunt our mountian place with a bow full time. Typically 50 yards or so is all you need with the deer I see. I could probably take a few every week from the deck.

I shot a few before i decided they gave no advantage for the average bowhunter. Then i got my kids and wife into hunting. So last year i got a clearance Barnett Jackyl to test the waters. Its very accurate, and we will see if someone will draw blood with it this year.

Btw xbows are made for ground blinds

Have you considered an air rifle?

I have but most I've found are almost as loud as a 22. Trying to be a little quieter so as not to scare the neighbors.
Heavy pellets make the ones with mufflers quiet, and sound nothing like a firearm.

I have a similar Xbow, low end with a red dot. It's pretty fun, with decent bolts it's pretty accurate. With what it came with it's disappointing.

I have thought about stepping up to a compound style.

Co2 is, the pump air rifles are rather quiet.
Airsoft is another option. They make blowback pistols that look close to the real thing.

I live in Cary and cci quiets are fun, or so I've heard... or not

i have a Barnett quad 400 it is heavy and cumbersome, as stated above but it will make a kill shot at 50 to 60 yds. for bow hunting I use an Oneida kestrel now, its more fun and lighter.

From what I've seen at our hunting club. They seem to be loads of fun for the wannabe bow hunters that don't want to take the time to actually learn the craft or actually shoot

Some people just want to hunt. I have a question for you: Do you use a rifle during gun season? Do you reload? I consider rifle hunters that don't reload wannabe's as well.

I got the $60 one off Amazon and put a green laser beam on it and it is point and thunk. It's fun. It's cheap and you can most definitly take a deer with it if you get close enough so that the sound doesn't spook them. Or anticipate the crouch. But you don't need to spend $400 to see if you like the whole experience. It will shoot through your typical non stick frying pan. Which reminds me we need a new frying pan...

The crossbow is great for those with shoulder problems that want to hunt in archery season and have trouble drawing bows.

Crossbows date back to at least 6 century BC, so it's not some new technology that's cheating.

Matter of fact just maybe those hunting with those new compound bows are also wannabe bow hunters. ;) with that cam assistance. They should only hunt with recurve and long bows! :D

and none of this fiber optic pin sights or drop-away rests either. A nock in the bow and a ledge is all you need. Shooting fingers, of course.

Yep and none of those trigger release thingys.

I bought an Excalibur Axiom a couple years ago when my right shoulder was messed up and, while it killed a couple deer the one season I hunted with it, it was heavy and awkward to get up into my climber (as mentioned upstream). Once I rehabbed my shoulder, I bought a compound and haven't looked back.

They are fun for shooting in the backyard but I find myself grabbing the compound way more often than the crossbow. Which reminds me, I need to start a FS thread for the Excalibur

Had a Excalibur, hunted it doubles with my son while he was young for a couple seasons. Once he was able to draw a strong enough compound I went back to my compound. Other than the down sides mentioned above. Mine was much louder than I anticipated. It would not fit the bill for what you are looking for. It was defiantly as louder as any airgun I have shot. I must admit the Excalibur I had was my only experience with Xbows so there maybe other brands that are a lot quieter.
