I want to start hunting.
I have a lot of shooting experience, but none at hunting.
School me....
what do I need to learn about for dressing and prepping the animal ( I think id like to start with deer)

Best thing you can do is find someone who is already “schooled” and go with them.

Fifty years is a lot to type.

If I was to start from scratch, today, youtube would be my friend. Watch countless videos on the subject. Learn all you can and use what you have learned with a good dose of common sense applied.

for First time, I'd go with a smaller game animal like squirrels.
Unless you already know a place that you can hunt deer on and have a lane to shoot in. and a tree stand in.
You'll be more likely to shoot at squirrels, ( more than once per day) you can just walk out into the woods, not much prep and they are pretty dang tasty.

Your first step is going to be a hunter safety certificate. Get signed up for a class but don't expect it to be quick this time of year. THEN go find an experienced hunter and see what you can learn from them. Also, you should start out with small game so you have some success before you go to deer and learn how to sit for hours and maybe not see anything......

NC has a hunter apprenticeship system in where you can accompany a licensed hunter and take part in the hunt without having to take the hunters safety or be licensed. I havent really read up on it but thats mainly because my kids have done the hunters safety course.

It seems like a good way to get your feet wet before investing alot of time and effort into something you may not enjoy
