I had wanted to build a nice table out of some nicely figured wood. There is a guy down the road who has some beautiful pieces of wood in slabs. So I picked a small slab or two of wormy maple.

My neighbor is a master carpenter, builds furniture for himself and family. They are a fun retired couple we hang out with and do a lot of gardening with. So he was down with a cool project.

So I will download the project as we went. Turned out well, I thought. 20190127_120332.jpg emp_9.jpg

That's nice. I like spalted maple, I used it to build my cabinets in my old house.

I also like the live edge design that is popular now but wonder if it won't be "dated" in a few years, like 60's furniture is now.

And those "bowties" are called dutchmen. Their purpose is to pull pieces of wood together that is in danger of cracking but it's a nice feature.

It did have a few small places that had cracking potential, so we put those in.

Awesome looking piece sir.

The legs were cherry. Bottom board was another spalted maple, but not from the same tree. We coated all of it with Danish Oil, so we didnt darken it too much. We also buffed the top out with butchers wax. After that,we put Poly on the bottom shelf, since it was a bit fuzzy, and that would help with protecting that figured grain.

I don't know if 60's furniture qualifies, but 50's "vintage" furniture is all the rage right now.
I think it's referred to as "Mid Century"

Beautiful table!

And yes, @fieldgrade 's right -- Mid Century Modern has been re-popular for years here in Hipsterville. I've made several pieces in that style for a couple different customers to match their collections/style.

The point is that lots of things go passe' only to be "rediscovered" 2 generations later. And hand-made by someone you know never goes out of vogue!
