So I was just getting ready to buy a few cases of 5.56 for carbine classes and i was thinking a PCC may be a good option to save some moola. The manual of arms must be the same/similar as an AR would be, granted i would have to buy new mag holders. Most of the classes i attend we are at less than 150 yard shots - 9mm should be fine for that in a carbine. Then i started looking and i see there are a bunch of choices here. I'm looking for something that is rock solid and bet your life on. Can anyone who has run one through its paces recommend a brand? Do the good ones all use the ubiquitous Glock mags? Are there any brands to steer clear of?

Thanks for any input,

V

Mine (AR platform) uses the 32rd Colt mags. They have a pretty good repuatation as well.

Only problems I’ve ever had have been caused by me. Mine is a 7” barreled upper that is shot 99% suppressed (only remove it when demonstrating the difference)...and the only failures have been when the BCG is dirty enough it doesn’t cycle properly.

Mine is built on a New Frontier Armory lower with one of their complete uppers. 7 inch barrel with pinned/welded supressor. Buzhnell TRS32 (Aimpoint Pro clone) with stock BUIS from another rifle. Takes glock mags.
Zero malfunctions to date.

Personally, I'd build an AR9 on a Glock lower. Spend about a G. Use it for fun and range/practice/learning. Fun as hell. Make a gun just for fun/practice and ammo value, shoot the crap out of it, and forget about self defense. I don't think they are suitable for that role. The JP GMR-15 possibly. And it fits your criteria, but it's spendy. I don't trust anybody that says their AR9 is reliable unless they have shot several thousands of rounds through it in varying conditions. Seen too many sheet the bed. I've seen quite a few very hard used JP's. Tens of thousands of rounds.

I have a tuned AR9 that I built that is a blast. I went for performance as the main goal (like most of my guns). And it performs. Just needs a little more attention to springs and whatnot. I like trucks. They are fun to drive. Until you get a sports car. Then you only want to drive the truck to do the dirty work. So, I encourage you to throw caution to the wind and build something racy and fun. PCC's are just fun to burn through ammo with. Preferably knocking steel over. And, they're allowed at a lot of pistol matches.

If I were looking for just solid and reliable, I'd get a CZ Scorpion.

Just my opinions.

Interesting, lots of different ideas. This is what i was seeing online, there are no "Gold Standards" that everyone agrees on. My biggest concern is it has to go bang when i pull the trigger. Anything that is not reliable is useless and i hate buyers remorse. I don't want to pawn off something less than stellar on someone else either.

NKD, do you use this for three gun? Its a rather expensive 9mm! I am trying to find a way to not spend $300 a month in 5.56 ammo for training :) They are tempting though, they look like they will run like a scalded dog... I haven't thought about using it for self defense, but i think 30 rounds of +P+ JHP coming out a 10+ inch barrel could be very effective and probably little recoil to worry about so quick follow up shots.

BigWaylon, who makes yours?

Draco88 and Me., ill look at the models you mentioned!

Thank you for your input.

I plan on pinning together an AR in 9mm with one of these sidecharging uppers from FM https://fm-products.com/upper-receiver-glock/

Mainly because Glock Mags. The lower will more than likely be an entire PSA pistol lower, just because that combo is proven and you can get extras for basically nothing.

FM Products is also a Vet Owned company and so is PSA.

No reason to spend a grand unless you're gonna spend $400 on mags and an optic.

If they're to be believed, you just need to clean it before 1500rds if you're doing full 33rd mag dumps with Wolf steelcased ammo in the desert.

I would think deeper on this.

If you want to shoot PCC in matches buy a 16"+ carbine. If not, then a braced pistol is more useful.

I went with a CZ Scorpion pistol and SB tactical brace. This pistol is covered under my NC CCH, i can run it in carbine classes as you talked about, i use it for home and mobile defense.

The only thing i can not do is run it in PCC matches. I think its a more reliable system, accurate enough to 150+yds and for everyday needs, a great investment.

I do not. I use a 556's for 3gun and 2gun. Because I love shooting them, and rifles in general. So, I built the PCC for use as practice for rifle technique, etc. And because I can load 9mm cheap.
I have used the PCC in ProAm and steel practical matches so far. Sooooo fun for that. I plan to use it at some point in 2gun. Also, I plan to run it in USPSA.

I'm trying to get my rifle shooting a little better, so the PCC is a good alternative to the pistol in USPSA. I really feel nothing improves your overall shooting like USPSA matches. So I look forward to running it in that soon. I kinda finished it at the end of last season and haven't shot it a ton this winter. Probably have 2500-3000 or so through it. You are welcome to try it of course. If you are ever close to Raleigh or Mebane.

First AR that I built was the 9. Spent a lot of money buying different parts and changing them out until I got what I should have spent the money on in the first place. My biggest problem was the hand guard for some reason. Had 2 of them that I sent back until I got the BMC guard. I tried to play around with the milspec trigger and could never get it right. Now, where I really screwed up was in the bolt. The first 5 or 6 times I shot the gun it would dump a 32 round clip in 2 trigger pulls. I was thinking the trigger but it was a weak spring in the bolt causing it to slam fire. Should have kept the bolt as is and bought a new bolt. It was a PSA bolt. ATF said that it was not an Class 3 gun because the trigger was a stock trigger. I use it to let new shooter play around with an AR style gun. Put a red dot and Sig light/laser on the front for home defense.

BigWaylon, who makes yours?
Bought a complete JSE upper.

Built the lower using an Aero PEW PEW lower, PSA MOE LBK, Hahn dedicated magwell block and (I think?) a Hahn buffer.

Thanks, I would like to to do USPSA or IPDA. I just need to go do one and get started. I started training at Apex to get prepared for going to competitions and never stopped going to Apex classes... Building the PCC to practice rifle technique is exactly what i was thinking to use this for. Also, Apex is building a shoot house and that will increase my rounds per month a bit. Having the same form factor and cheaper bullets is the appeal.

I built a frankenstein SBR:

New Frontier upper and lower
MAS Defense barrel and hanguard

No issues, love the Glock style mags
To add:
I also would recommend getting a hydraulic buffer, it helps dampen recoil a bit.

Ever actually shot a 9mm PCC? Mocksville is ~30 minutes from the range I use (PHA). We could meet up sometime and you could try it out. Maybe something else with a different style (Scorpion instead of AR?) could join us.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably build a 16 inch AR 9 type for now, in the future who knows. If i am going to build a shorty anything i will probably go SBR and suppress it.

Did someone say Scorpion and range in the same breath?

I'm down!!!

Depending on the date I could join in with my Scorpion. Week days are best for me.

PSA upper (4.5" + 6" F1 can)
KAW valley bolt
Anderson lower, SBR'd
PSA Colt Magazine insert
Blitzkrieg hydraulic buffer
MVB (?) stock

100%, failure free, a couple thousand rounds of various cheap steel cased 115's through subsonic 147s. My favorite range toy by far, and I wouldn't hesitate to grab it for serious work if required.

If you want to be compete I suggest Glock mag AR9 or MPX. For the mag capacity mostly. Though the MPX is supposed to be much smoother than the blowback guns.

I did a cheap, maybe $500 added to an existing lower, build on a Colt pattern adapter, I'm content with it but suspect based on the impact marks on the barrel HPs would stop it cold. Glock mag with a ramped barrel I imagine would feed them fine.

Thanks for the offer. I may give you a holler and do that! I have indeed shot a PCC AR, a few of them in fact. It almost feels like cheating at less than 25 yards it is so easy to hit plates,
never tried the Scorpion though.

PHA is a great range. I haven't been there in years. I have thought about joining many times, but i shoot at Sportsmans lodge as it is 8 minutes away. I live closer to Yadkinville than Mocksville.

I'm in Hickory, so not too far. I could bring a Scorpion.

I built mine from mostly QC10 stuff. I have never had a failure, but I have only shot freedom munitions remanufactured 115gr and 147gr subs in it. These things are super fun, everyone I let shoot it wants one.

QC10 upper, lower, and bolt
Faxon Arms 8.5" barrel
BCM KMR ALPHA 7" handguard
IWC keymod handstop
POF drop in trigger
Seekins Precision ambi safety lever
KAK Shockwave brace, tube, heavy buffer and recoil spring
Holosun HS503C

Dave hit it. Scorpion for 100% reliability. I've had mine for 3 years, probably 3000 rounds, never cleaned it. Seriously. It's never even had a hiccup. My AR9 is great but when it gets dirty it gets picky. If my life depended on it, scorpion all the way. It is my bedside gun with an RMR and soon will have a Omega 9K.

yall let me know when youre doing PHA with all these, please
