So as some of you saw in the other post I just switched from a couple pro 1000's to the XL650.

I got it mounted and started setting it up yesterday but am waiting on my dies to come in before I go all out.

Anyways, I thought I'd create this thread to share some experiences and ask questions as I go through it.

First off:

The press is amazing, the quality is unreal, as soon as you unbox it it's clear to see why the cost is what it is. I think I was most impressed with the bullet tray and primer flip tray!

Second its tall as hell! I had to lower my work bench and it now looks like it's made for someone barely over five feet tall, but with the strong mount I have it at perfect height while sitting.

I also before I got it ordered the ski jump fix, spent primer fix, and crud catcher from dillon upgrades. The only thing I'm considering now is the inline light or not.

Okay so first question:

I got the primer system set up today, and realized that it takes around 5 handle pull or so to get the first primer in the correct spot for loading. So my question is with the press having the ability to "extract" live primers, do you guys just keep the primer tube and "disk" full and miss a live primer or two when you start your loading session? Meaning if I run out of cases at the end of my loading session and add more it will take two pulls to get that case sized, and advanced, so do I just miss those two primers? Hopefully that makes sense.

So far super happy with it, and I haven't even loaded a round yet!

....so this isnt about dual sports???

The 650 will expel a primer on your side of the primer system down the little blue slide. You need to rig up something to catch these unused primers. Every time a primer is available and a case is not, you will get a primer down the slide. Save them and add to the next 100.
You need to get this. It may need a burr removed but it works like a charm. Very small rat tail file and, maybe, a small sharp knife. Much easier than playing 100 pickup. I guess the update is preventing me from loading a video of this device:

I can, at the beep, dump 100 primers in the tray, shake, and vibrate them to a filler tube (that replaces the Dillon tube) in under a minute. Well worth the dollars.

Thanks for the reply! I already got the fixes for the spent and live primers from dillonupgrades and have them installed. I'll look into that vibraprime seems like a great contraption.

I already was thinking about going the auto Dillon route but hey this is way cheaper!

When I load I like to finish off with no primers left over and an empty shell plate. So when I start, I pull the handle, load and size a case, pull the handle again, load and size the second case. Now you have a case sitting over the station where a primer gets inserted. I pull that case out and manually index the primer plate by hand until a primer shows up, I then place the case back over the primer and seat it, now I'm ready to go. At the end when the primer buzzer goes off, I turn off my case collator. I then continue to work until I feel that the primers have run out by one not being seated into a case. I then place a piece of .223 brass into the mechanism that drops cases onto the shell plate, and remove the piece of brass that just dropped out, then run the shell plate empty. Essentially, I load 100 primer, and finis up with 100 rounds, with nothing left of the shell plate. If I have a hiccup somewhere and a primer gets by, I reload it into the primer chute. I went from a manual index 550 to the auto index 650 so it took me a bit to work out a pattern that would let me end that way.

I use the Frankford Arsenal Vibra prime, if they charged 100 bucks for that thing it would still be worth the coin. It will fill the Dillon primer tubes.

Ahh Moose, I didn't know you could cycle the primer disc by hand. Now it should make much more sense. Yeah the primer stuff is the one issue. However, once they are "loaded" it seems to always function perfect. So I think as of now I don't mind the little extra time to get the primers in the tube, if the press runs smooth and error free when dealing with the primers.

Thanks all!

Check out the link below to Dillon Upgrades. The live primer catcher did the trick nicely for me and keeps them all in nice little bottle so that I don't feel bad leaving them there until I have to fill primer tubes.

Huh, no problems like that with the primer system on the 550. Pull the handle with no case ready, the primer stays in the cup, ready for when brass is present.
