Hey all, does anyone have any idea if an Indiana lifetime CHP is still valid after moving to NC from IN? I think typically most out of state permits are honored but when they expire an NC permit needs to be applied for in the normal way - but for states that offer a lifetime permit such as IN, is it still valid and accepted in NC as it doesn't expire...

I think after you are a resident for 30 days, you have to get a NC permit because your permit must match your address on your NCDL. I could be wrong though.

I'm not an expert but I believe I remember reading that everything becomes invalid when you move out of state.

Agree with the above. Most permits are resident permits. There are some that are specifically non-resident permits.

The other thing to consider is it wouldn't be valid for purchasing a handgun after 5 years, even if it didn't expire...regardless of if you were able to carry with it.

I had a lifetime Indiana CCW license (still do), but got a new one when I moved to NC. I wish we had the lifetime option here.

I'm sure if you notify the police chief in the town you moved from that you are no longer a resident, then your permit will not be valid anymore. Plus, if you ever want to be able to buy a gun in NC, you'll want to get a new CCW here anyway.

Even then I donā€™t think he could purchase one in nc without a purchase permit.

Since Indiana issues non-resident permits you may be able to have the issuing agency swap it from a resident to non-resident permit so you will be able to enjoy your investment. IF they do so remember there are a few states donā€™t honor non-resident permits so that and the fact an NC CHP acts as our Pistol Purchase Permit as well as a substitute for a NICS check when an FFL does the 4473 on the purchase of a handgun or long gun which is dang convenient.

Probably not...but definitely not after 5 years. For the same reason you can carry with an expired NC CHP but not purchase with one.

Definitely not. You cant buy a pistol in NC without an NC permit(s), has to be a valid NC CHP or PPP for buying handguns.

You must notify your Superintend within 30 days of changing your address. I'm sure he will let you know if your license is going to be valid or not.

Some FFL run a NICS even with a permit. It's optional.

The local prepper shop near me does transfers and puts it on their website that they do a NICS check regardless.

No big deal to me in the end, but it did kind of rub me the wrong way considering the time it took the sheriff to issue My CHP and the law says that our CHP is as good as a NICS inquiry. LOL, probably better since NICS doesn't wait for your mental health records if any exist. They only pick up adjudicated stuff if the clerk of the court is reporting as they should be.

It has been my experience that once you move your permit is no longer valid. The one exception that comes to mind is VA. If you have a valid VA permit and move out of state the permit automatically becomes a non-resident permit. They will not renew it when it expires. At that time you have to apply for a non-resident permit. I carried in KY for almost a year on a VA permit. I carried a copy of the statute in my wallet with the permit just in case.

I currently carry in NC on a VA non-resident permit because I am still waiting on my NC permit. If you move a lot it is always good to have a least one non-resident permit to use between your move and obtaining a permit from your new state. I move a lot and could carry on a non-resident permit but I always get a in state permit because it is a lot less of a hassle.
