Okay, so I'm trying to make some iris aperture things that allow me to get a "happy medium" focus on things when I'm fumbling around in the dark. Yes, that's right. FUMBLING. If you're looking for some insight from some high speed, low drag operator dude...I'm not him.

Since everything related to night vision costs a left arm and a right testicle, I want to try to find some work arounds that would save me a little money. Here is the thing I'm trying to approximate:

So for my dual tube setup I was looking at $500 freakin' dollars for those things. Cause I'd need two. Nah. Heck nah.

Ok, so attempt #1.
In this post, I construct some functional but admittedly ghetto fabulous things that are really cheap.
Don't get me wrong. They do WORK. Maybe I had to put a little electrical tape on the housing to snug them up a bit. But if it wasn't dark, I bet you could see the thought bubble over my head as my fingers fumbled around. Where TF is that little flerugin lever??

Just feast your eyes on this fine dremel craftsmanship. Who wouldn't be proud of such a thing? (Honestly it is harder than it looks and I'm sorta proud of it)

Attempt #2:

A buddy of mine @second_responder showed me another option that, while a bit more expensive, was still WAAYYYY cheaper that the Tarsier option. No more lever. No more electrical tape. No more cheesy Butler Creek flip up sight cover. No more expert dremel skillz required. Instead, you get a smooth metal ring that expands and contracts the iris. So kudos to him for the tip!

Went ahead and ordered some stuff from Bond Villain Bezos. Took a couple weeks for it to come in slow boat from the Orient.

So these two parts actually thread together. The glass lens threads right into the iris aperture. Well, its technically not a lens its a UV filter, but you get the idea.

And makes a nice elegant cohesion between iris and "sacrificial window".

Then you just thread that assembly right into the front of the housing. Nice one on the right and the cheaper previous attempt is on the left.

A good 'ol 37mm lens cover does the trick...

Each one was $86 bucks. Ok, that comes out to $172 for both. Still beats the heck out of $500. I'm not so sure this isn't every bit as good at the Matbok Tarsiers. It's actually metal and glass, not plastic.

Tune back in to see what sort of dumb project I come up with next time.

Links to the items are as follows in case you want to do this yourself. I know it works with the Carson housing, but that's the only one I'm sure of.

Edit: Ok, something is going on with trying to post links from Amazon on here. Not sure what the deal is, so just copy and paste the following in the search window and that should bring up what you need.

1. Adjustable 1.5-26mm Iris Diaphragm M30 to M37 Camera Lens Module Adapter Ring
2. K&F Concept 37mm MC UV Protection Filter with 28 Multi-Layer Coatings HD/Hydrophobic/Scratch Resistant Ultra-Slim UV Filter for 37mm Camera Lens (Nano-X Series)
3. 2 Pack JJC 37mm Center Pinch Front Lens Cap Cover with Deluxe Lens Cap Keeper for Olympus Panasonic Canon Nikon and Other Brand of Lenses with 37mm Filter Thread

I'm sure you can also find a single pack of the center pinch front lens cap. Hope this is helpful to someone.

The links aren't behaving and I don't know why, but I put the names of the items so hopefully you can find them on Amazon that way. I'll try to figure out how to make the link work.
You put the info up as I was searching the other thread. I tried to delete my post before you got to it.
Thanks!

tagging my buddy @patina

He recommended this set up and we both did it on BNVD-SG and 1531's. I think its a stellar setup. You can also easily replace your 'sacrificial' UV lens.
Another of my shooting buddies went to school with one of the Matbock cofounders and we all agreed even with the buddy buddy discount $500 is ridiculous. I would go this route if I had to do it again.

Side note, I don't really feel that the tarsiers are truly helpful. I rarely use them for their intended purpose and most of the time I use them as a bikini cover that I can't lose. It's an extra layer of protection in a nice compact package vs sac lenses + bikini/lens covers.

@CiZmatic4 and I are on the same page. If you were doing a shit ton of CQB with high FOM binos, they could be handy. For normal tooling around they add unnecessary weight and additional adjustment.
