Okay, so I'm trying to make some iris aperture things that allow me to get a "happy medium" focus on things when I'm fumbling around in the dark. Yes, that's right. FUMBLING. If you're looking for some insight from some high speed, low drag operator dude...I'm not him.
Since everything related to night vision costs a left arm and a right testicle, I want to try to find some work arounds that would save me a little money. Here is the thing I'm trying to approximate:
So for my dual tube setup I was looking at $500 freakin' dollars for those things. Cause I'd need two. Nah. Heck nah.
Ok, so attempt #1.
In this post, I construct some functional but admittedly ghetto fabulous things that are really cheap.
Don't get me wrong. They do WORK. Maybe I had to put a little electrical tape on the housing to snug them up a bit. But if it wasn't dark, I bet you could see the thought bubble over my head as my fingers fumbled around. Where TF is that little flerugin lever??
Just feast your eyes on this fine dremel craftsmanship. Who wouldn't be proud of such a thing? (Honestly it is harder than it looks and I'm sorta proud of it)
Attempt #2:
A buddy of mine @second_responder showed me another option that, while a bit more expensive, was still WAAYYYY cheaper that the Tarsier option. No more lever. No more electrical tape. No more cheesy Butler Creek flip up sight cover. No more expert dremel skillz required. Instead, you get a smooth metal ring that expands and contracts the iris. So kudos to him for the tip!
Went ahead and ordered some stuff from Bond Villain Bezos. Took a couple weeks for it to come in slow boat from the Orient.
So these two parts actually thread together. The glass lens threads right into the iris aperture. Well, its technically not a lens its a UV filter, but you get the idea.
And makes a nice elegant cohesion between iris and "sacrificial window".
Then you just thread that assembly right into the front of the housing. Nice one on the right and the cheaper previous attempt is on the left.
A good 'ol 37mm lens cover does the trick...
Each one was $86 bucks. Ok, that comes out to $172 for both. Still beats the heck out of $500. I'm not so sure this isn't every bit as good at the Matbok Tarsiers. It's actually metal and glass, not plastic.
Tune back in to see what sort of dumb project I come up with next time.

Matbock Tarsier Eclipse NVG Focus Enhancement Device
Universal Focus Adjustable Iris Quantity one(1). You must select quantity two(2) for dual tube systems

Intro To Night Vision
@Studentofthegun, I'd be happy to let you have a looksee sometime if you like, as I know you're somewhat local to me since you bought a handguard from a good friend of mine who lives in Raleigh a month or two back. :) Yeah met him at the mall of all places lol. Good guy to do business with...
