Is all-metal better?

Wow, I wish you were closer. We have an example of most all handguns here except for HK. As always there is NO FEE here for shooting or your ammo to try out different things.

No H&K's at Battery Oaks????? o_O

So how not close are you? I'm almost in SC!

Some of our shooters have them Jep, but I don't own any. I have had their long guns, just don't have anything right now.
So, come October, I don't need to leave my carry piece at home?

You and your HK better be here. You see, I have little midget hands and the HKs don't "fit" me so good. I have had a used a good bit a P7. A dandy and with the "safety" on the grip instead of on the trigger...

I've got directions off google maps saying it's about 90 miles from me....you might see me when cold weather hits!!!

That's just a hop and skip. It is really not good shooting now. I go down and shoot a 5 round drill daily and am wet when I get back. You are welcome, stay in the Bunkhouse overnight if you wish. All, of course is free to CFF members.

@BatteryOaksBilly
Do own or have you shot a CS9? I'm having a lot of difficulty gripping mine properly and I see on the interweb this is a common problem.
I have not Ole Pard. Only one of our guys is a dedicated HK guy. Or as dedicated as he can be. He will be explaining the critical mass of the planet Jupiter and then..oh look a squirrel. Boy's hard to keep on point if you get my drift.

Hell, I stay confused. Yes, I love the S&W DA/SA. Just sold a 645, it was sweet. The only one I have right now is a 5906. All these guns have the best reset in the industry. Unbelievable! No travel, just a lightening pressure on the trigger and READY. Nothing compares.

Haven't shot my 5906 yet.

I'll bring that CS9. I believe you'll like it.

Yes, way too hot and buggy now! I'm just hanging on till cold weather...it makes me happy, even if the pipes freeze! Lol.

It's not written in stone.
I have a 41 magnum snubbie. It's all metal except for the Pachmayr grip. The metal is Titanium though, and the gun only weighs 21oz.
With semi-wadcutter bear loads, it will about break your wrist. Very few people I let shoot this thing, only my experienced buddys, and even then I almost make them sign a waiver. :D
The Pachmayr grip does help tremendously. A quality grip that fits you cannot be understated.

The Judge has a reputation of being a recoil monster. Mine is stainless steel.
But because it's so heavy, even with magnum 410 shells or hot 45 long colts, it's really not that bad.
But yeah, you still have to hold on. Weight alone does not guarantee easy.

For the life of me, I cannot get past the guys who recommend for their Lady friend a snubbie revolver, or a tiny 380. That might be the dumbest recommendation in all of gunland, especially for a Lady that doesn't have a lot of experience. The reckoning is that they have tiny hands and need a tiny gun. Snubbies and bitty auto's are some of the hardest to shoot since there's nothing to grab on to, they don't weigh crap, and are snappish as hell. It's my experience that 8 out of 10 Ladies hate the things.

In your travels, try a S&W model 10 38 special with a 4" barrel. Most gun rental places have one, or better yet make the short drive to @BatteryOaksBilly. I'm sure he has one. They have the perfect balance of size, weight and feel , stone reliable, totally controllable, plenty of stopping power, easy to clean, and a good used one can be had for $300.
And the trigger is like butter.
You'll be in love.

My Dad lives and breathes S&W 357/38sp revolvers. He would love your post. In his opinion the 38 special in a revolver is the perf ct non-military gun. In combat things may change. Ina short hallway or alley it will work.

A .44 Special May be worth checking out. It’s a very mild, yet still beefy round.

As far as keeping recoil down, is an all-metal gun going to do that better?

Honestly no. It is all about subjective ergonomics. It it about your hand + your grip + grip angle + position relative to bore axis + hand strength+ arm extension+ CALIBER .... IT is all relative and it is all subjective. IMHO. There are tons of all metal guns that simply do not work me for. The combination simply add up to something that does not work. There was a time early in my shooting life where I would try to shoehorn myself into a platform that simply did not work for me. it was the "it" think. It was what everyone around me said was the best thing since sliced bread... "CZ" cough cough LOL but just because some people on a forum tell you it is the "best" does not mean it is the best for you. I have since learned that there are so many choices it does not make sense to own or shoot something that does not work for you. Choose carefully and pick the gun that points naturally for you in your hand and is reliable.

Unfortunately there is no short cut way to determine what works for YOU and what doesn't. Trial and error is the only way to figure it out. It takes longer than a few rounds through a rental gun. I know I am not alone in this realization. Most experienced shooters at one time or another have shot a few rounds through platform purchase it only to find it did not fit the way the initial first impression indicated. There is no short cut. For me 200-500 rounds is often what it takes for me to "know" a platform works for me.

In the end you have to go through some trial and error. Buy cheap, buy use never pay more than you can sell the gun for +/- a few $$ so your learning does not break the bank and most of all enjoy the process. Finding "your" platform that feels like it was built for you is one of the greatest joys of firearms ownership IMHO.

For me personally this is one of my joys....

Lol on the CZ!
I get what you're saying, am doing my best not to make a costly mistake. But firing a few rounds thru a rental gun is surely better than not firing it at all, right? I'd probably not have ended up with my much loved revolver if I had shot it first...or might have bought it after I got proficient with other guns first. It's very lively! Hence now wanting a heavier gun for the house. Not giving up on the revolver, once I've got a regular place to shoot, I'm going to work on that one! Lol.

Yeah, my revolver hurt me! I still love it though! And I did buy a .380, and love it! Not too snappy for me at all! Once I got the longer magazine in there, it fit my hand really well, and I didn't hurt myself!
my gun buying will probably not stop with this one I'm shopping for now! Lol. Potato chips, someone said! You can't have just one! I agree, and will try to add a revolver or two to my collection. II'll see what Jim's has...
