Is Civilization Just A Thin Veneer Between Civility And Civil Breakdown?

"When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve. -The Joker”

2 Kings 6:28-29

And the king asked her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’
So we boiled my son and ate him. And on the next day I said to her, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him.’ But she has hidden her son.”

I can think of any number of original Star Trek episodes with this theme of the thin veil of civilization.

Arena: with the Metrons and the Gorn
A Taste of Armageddon: the wars fought by computer

Can we get to this part? I'm OK dying in the chaos but the suspense is starting to irk me

And how do you like your long pig prepared? Vlad preferred the Pike and spit technique over easy.

There is a good read by Lawson....A failure of civility. Also I can recommend....The Civil Defense Manual. Every household should have these books as I feel they will be very relevant soon...unfortunately.

Civilization is organic and natural. The veneer is only damaged by barbarians and subversive internal elements.
