Let's say I'm looking for a particular gun but the shops all around are empty due to the current panic or whatever is causing this fiasco of lack of guns and ammo (COVID is part of the problem I'm sure). Is it even worth asking a local shop if they can get said particular gun for me?

What’s the harm?

It will also depend on what gun it is. I wanted a Taylor 45 LC and asked my LGS to order one for me. He told me it would several weeks before it would be in. I picked it up from him the next week. He was surprised too.

If ya really want the gun, the shop is reliable and you do not feel like your being gouged, order It...
I just contacted one of my most frequented shops in NC last week and ordered a handgun that I have been wanting. I currently live about an hour away from this shop now, but All the shops around my current location came up as LAME when even trying to discuss ordering a new gun. They acted either like it was impossible, or gonna cost me.... LOL -**** I think they are used to folks worshiping them, I'm not sure.
The main shop that I frequented in the past, outside the Charlotte area had no issues, over the phone, and told me upfront that it could be a few weeks or a few months. They just did not know for sure when it would arrive, but they would order it and call when it showed up, if I was okay with me. It was, so I did. The price quoted when ordered is the price honored.

It will really depend on you LGS and your relationship. Mine will check everyday and work with their distributor until they can get one, while charging a normal mark up. Its one advantage when you find a LGS worth supporting and try to use them majority of the time as well as send a lot of people their way.

Other gun shops will just say no i cant get it or if they can it will be wayyy marked up.

Also depends on what you are looking for...

That Browning is a looker!!! A new carry gun?
I decided that I needed a new pistol to carry, and beat up when I was out working on a remote property. I usually took a rifle, but recently decided it wasnt as handy to have laying 20 foot away as a pistol is on my person.
I have some carry pistols, but nothing I would regularly take to my current working conditions. I've never had a Rock Island 1911 and ordered the Rock ultra FS 9mm mod. 51623
You mentioned S&W Revolvers - I got a 686 (no dash) I bet youd appreciate. Had this thing forever...

Checked gun.deals.com for you and in 3 seconds it Looks like Bass Pro has at least one in stock: https://gun.deals/product/browning-...-acp-425-barrel-8-rnds-64999-free-store-picku

pay for it online and select an FFL from their list of have your FFL of choice email them their FFL ASAP Monday morning.

best o’ success!
But it's not the Compact version. I had seen that a couple of days ago and got all excited until I realized that it's the full-size version (of the 85% version)😄

I wouldn't use a brick and mortar store to order anything. Too many good online stores like Grab A Gun who even do financing. Just find a good tabletop FFL and don't look back. Mine takes layaway for the guns he does stock.

Basically for me LGS are places to buy used guns I can handle in person.
