Is there any way to legally carry an auto?

I'd love to get a Microtech, but if it's just a safe queen it's not worth it for me.

Edit: I'm in NC

Have I mentioned yet today how much I detest government interference in what I do that should be of no concern to others?

Grrrhhhh

I thought the problem was concealed carry of auto knives... if you carry in a belt sheath isn't it ok in NC ....

You're thinking of concealed v open carry of knives. Autos are a different issue.

Work for the government. I think that's the only way. And that sucks donkey balls.

Or, just carry it anyway. I carry a Gerber auto, have used it a hundred times in public, and nobody has ever said a thing; a SWAT team didn't roll me up, he sky remains suspended above, and it's still in my pocket.

Ive always interpreted it to mean concealed (doesnt mean im right)...so mine has the pocket clip sticking out so everyone can see it (lol). I asked a sheriff i knew...he said you'd likely be fine with it unless you did something stupid, and then mouthed off to the cops and they were just looking to add anything to you they could.

I've got a Benchmade "Infidel" spring loaded Auto knife. I had to get a letter from my commander in order to bring it back into the US, and another to send it back to Benchmade to be fixed! Not sure if I can legally carry it now that I'm retired!?

My understanding of the law is that you can't conceal an automatic knife unless you are a 1st responder or the like. I used to collect them. Bought legally from local shops. Had a number of Microtechs and Protechs. They generally come with belt pouches for this reason I think.

I have a number of good autos. They were once very useful, but since Benchmade released the 705 I've found the stud on the blade and the axislock mechanism to be better for me.

i did carry a microtech Scarab for a year, I found it to not be very practical. I bought a Benchmade auto-Stryker and never carried it because the blade geometry is so impractical for anything but stabbing ninjas wearing bamboo armor.

Carry it.
I carry an auto Benchmade often, and a relative of mine carries one daily. And has for at least a decade.

I carry a benchmade auto or a spyderco(because it was present from my Captain). Seems like tons of folks carry them these days but yes the law indicates first responders and military in NC.

Get an Emerson with the Wave feature and don't worry about it. The blade is already out by the time the knife leaves your pocket and you can get one with a regular style handle or a Karambit style.

To the OP: why would anyone care that you had one? Why would you be in a position that would make someone care that you had one?

There is no snark or smartassery intended here, but serious questions.

Unless you run afoul of the law frequently or you feel that some do gooder is going to turn you in, why even worry?

This would be very low on my list of concerns in today's world.

I agree, but couldn't this be said about any law that has no logical basis? I.E the NFA and its ridiculous SBR law.

I would say yes. However, to me there is a difference between pocket knives or being short a part or two for 922 compliance and a SBR or SBS with no tax stamp.

I'll go with the majority and carry on.

The tax stamps however, I'll continue to be religious about getting!

I'm personally wary of giving any over-zealous JBT an opening through which to **** me royally.

Once they get that probable cause, warrants ensue and damn near every one of us breaks the law somehow, because there's such a bloated mass of laws to break.

Only a safe queen if you allow it to be only a safe queen.

Ditto

I was hanging out this evening with a...senior member....of Microtech staff (they're built here in Asheville area) and 2 different LEO, one a state troooper another local PD. Each of them are of the opinion that OTF knives are perfectly legal here in NC.

When it comes to auto knives they are just not my thing. Not that they're not cool and not that I don't think people should own them, I just haven't been trained and aggressive knife fighting and so my standard carry option works fine for me. Because honestly if I'm about to get in the knife fight it's really quickly going to become a gun fight.
