Is this sweetgum?

I found this pic on the web.
Black walnut on the right side.
Bark and heartwood look exactly like my tree.
(Left side is osage orange in case anyone is wondering)

Wow, I grew up around tons of Osage Orange and never saw one anywhere close to that stout! It is such an interesting tree... Striking color/flexibility in the wood and weird fruit.

Were you able to save any big lengths of the walnut? I guess even if it's already cut to firewood length, there are lots of nice woodworking options if you're into that.

The osage fruit is really weird looking.
I found one at work and puzzled over it for awhile.

I have a 15' log of walnut.
All nearly the size of the round in the pic.
I'm still not 100% sure its black walnut but the bark and sap/heartwood certainly look right. The area its growing is definitely known for Black walnut.
Odds are good.

Expensive firewood if it is from a decent log. @Scsmith42 could probably confirm for sure.

That middle pic in your original post sure looks like black walnut to me.

No balls, don't think it is gum. My neighbor had a 24" gum dropped and I brought the rounds over in my yard. It took me dang near a month to split that crap after a year of sitting in the sun. If I had the cash to get them taken out I've got 6 more big ones in my back yard that just suck, The balls will not rot and dang near won't burn.

Nothing to add... however every single time I read the title as "this sweet gun" and open the thread only to "doh, dammit" at least 2 times a day.

Back in the 80's, we had a yankee from Long Island move down across the street from us. It was culture shock for him, and Dad made it worse by always pranking him. One day the neighbor saw some sweet gum balls laying on the ground, so he picked a couple up, walked to our house, and asked Dad what they were. Dad replied, "oh my gosh, them's porcupine eggs, put 'em back where you got 'em!" It was about a year later before someone told him any better.
I lol-ed at this. Nice

I hate to even say this, but is there a chance it is walnut? It looks big for one, but the color and bark look right. Poplar would probably have had greens, yellow and purples in the color, and not so much brown.

You win.
It's been confirmed.
Now the million dollar question....
Firewood or slab it....
It sure does split nice!

As a woodworker... I say , make something !

The Osage in a 7 ft piece would have made a few nice self-bows

Slab it. Make something cool for your home or cabin and share pics with us.

If we had known it split nicely at the outset, I would have never suggested green ash. Lol.

Slab it or sell the log unless it is to busted up. To many other lower valued trees around to turn into heat.

Lol, well if you don't want to make a few nice tables or mantles, I'd say sell it and buy some split seasoned hickory or whatever is next on the homestead purchase list!

Split hickory is already in the bag ;)

Homestead needs run more towards bourbon these days!
Anyone want to trade some pappy for a black walnut log?
I'll throw in some hickory for your smoker!
