It just started to sound a little funny

Funny you should post that. I have to look at the rear drums on our Patriot when I get home. Sounds like something scraping when I hit the brakes. I have no problem doing disk brake work but drums are a PITA. But getting a look will tell me if I need to take it in for the more trained work.

I was behind a tractor trailer this evening and it looked like a brake drum just fell right off and rolled across the road. Only thing I can figure is they laid it on the trailer working on it and forgot. Because the rest of the wheels stayed on.

I wish I could say these are the worst brakes that I've seen on a semi truck. But they're not by far

oh yeah. that lug bolt is definitely loose. We will need to replace them all, $400.00, special anti seize at $200.00 , Labor at $350.00. So, $950.00,(Could go over, rough estimate) and you wont be hearing that noise anymore. GTG. But yep...those loose lug bolts will cause that....definitely the lug bolts. :)

Yep, I hear ya.

Just did my brakes a couple weeks ago. Started grinding and I'm "WTF? Where the h*ll is the squeeler?"

I had done all the brakes the last time, so I was pretty sure from past experience that the rear brakes weren't going to need anything, what with the front brakes doing the vast majority of the work. But I figured, what the heck...pads all around and rotors for the front.

Put the car on the lift at the hobby shop, pulled the front wheels off and....no damage to the rotors. Aw, cr*p...and I didn't buy rotors for the back.

Shoulda stopped right there, put the wheels back on and went out to pick up rear rotors. But noooooo...

Pulled the rear wheels off...driver's side rotor chewed up on the inside.

In for a penny, in for a pound, I pulled the calipers off the back, yanked the rotors, swapped the pads so all I would have to do is slap the wheels back on after I picked up a set of rotors.

Spent an hour trying to get the frickin' pads in on the driver's side before I figured out I had the new clips installed upside down.

Walked to the Advance store, literally just outside the base gate from the hobby shop. Took the chewed rotor with me because d*mned if I'm going to walk to get these and then find out when I get back to the hobby shop that they're the wrong ones.

Paid for the rotors, told the lady as I was packing the new rotors in my backpack "Well, now to talk back to the hobby shop and put these on".

Her: "You're going to walk all the way to the hobby shop carrying three rotors?"

Me: "No, I'm going to walk all the way to the hobby shop carrying TWO rotors."

Her: "But there are three here..."

Me: "Yep. But only TWO are leaving with me."

Her: *smiling* "Got it! I'll take care of this one!"

Twenty minute walk round trip. Not bad.

Everything else went smooth as silk...until I was putting the mounting bolts in for the last caliper on the front. D*mned if the threads weren't slightly buggered up in the holes. HTF did THAT happen? Spent an hour trying to find the correct sized metric tap at the hobby shop. Finally found one with the right thread size, but too small to actually tap...used it to scrape the threads a bit, as it was probably just a slight nick on the first thread to the holes. Worked like a charm.

As for those with drum brakes...I cut my teeth on drum brakes as a kid, working on the family cars with Dad. They're not that bad. Pay attention to the springs which you take them off is all.

UNLESS...you're brakes are so far gone that the shoes have cut a 1/8" deep groove into the drum and you have to apply lots of elbow grease, vicious cursing, and sacrifice a lot of skin trying to pry the drums off. That part sucks.

By the way...didn't the squealer used to be on ALL the brake pads? Now they're only on one per pair.

Grrr...

Just snap a few photos before you tear it apart, or just look on the other side by things are mirror imaged.

A few years ago I was at a buddies shop helping out. Had a nicer, late 90's 4Runner up on the lift that came in for "noise in front end".

Pull the front wheels..... The rotors have been ground OFF their hub, and the outer ring is dangling, jammed against the dust shield. ON BOTH SIDES:eek::confused:

While thinking what in the actual hell, I pull the rears to find the shoes are pure metal and so thin they have holes worn in themo_O

These people are on the road every day and can vote:(

Trying to find the pic now

What is frightening is they sit on juries.

Well...ceramic pads aren't "bad pads" nor "cheap pads".
ceramics are usually higher end pads so that only leaves the manufacturer and some make better stuff than others. I really like Auto Specilty brake products, I have been using their stuff on customers cars as well as my own for many years and have not once had a problem with their stuff. I can't say the same for the parts stores house brands, squeelbestos or wagner.

Now I can't speak to the brand that you're talking about but for my personal vehicles I have use a lot of Wagner or akebono. I've always had good luck out of them and they always performed very well. Im about to do the brakes on the 350 and I'm thinking about giving motocraft brake pads a try.

I had forgotten about Akebono they manufacture a lot of oem stuff for the asian cars they make good stuff too. I have never had a set of wagners that didn't squeel though, I am glad you have had good luck with them.
