James May, of BBC Top Gear / Grand Tour fame, has an Amazon special mini-series where he takes a month or so and travels all over Japan.
I watched the first episode, of six, and really enjoyed it. He goes to many places, not just the huge cities, and does various jobs and such.

Looks like it just came out, I look forward to the next five episodes

Thanks for letting us know. I love that man!

Finished it just now.
I liked it.
No, it's no Top Gear or Grand Tour, but it was well made, many beautiful shots like youre used to seeing on those shows, and opened my eyes to a world I'll likely never see (just not a ton of interested in going to Asia)

The wife and I finally got around to watching this one. We both enjoyed it. It was typical James May awkwardness and I thought it worked perfectly.

Hrm. I had always wanted to go to japan. wife says she's down, but I need to have a plan for things to see. Of course, now that I have a wife, the things i go see might be a little different than they would have been years ago. and I might have to take her to some places i might have not made a high priority for myself (bunny and deer islands included).
Maybe this would be a good way to build a list. All I have really is ride the bullet train, head north to check out the hot spring monkeys, back down to denden town, akiba, a stop at a rabu hoteru... maybe find a few museums.

Ive never been super interestd in Asia, I think a big part is the food - being on an island (Japan, and Ive had many friends tour there with their music), it's a lot of fish/seafood, which I hate.
BUT, this series made me think, "Hmmm might be cool..."

I'd want a guide like the one overexcited one, call me master and stuff lol

would NOT want little 'bim' bot being my guide, driving me nuts

Yeah, the food might be a big problem, and part of the reason we haven't gone yet. Wife has become super picky due to diet/nutrition issues. And I haven't eaten meat since before the Nagano olympics... I live for a week or two on candy bars, crackers, and peanut butter, but wife does not want to end up in a hospital... and over there even the ice cream is squid and fish flavored, so that's a dealbreaker for both of us.
