January/February 2024 22lr 50yd rimfire Challenge

I am trying a Jard trigger on a CZ w/Boyds at one stock. It is the 3 to 6 oz trigger pull, but 3 oz is scary light, so I adjusted back up to 5 oz.
Jards are very nice. I bought and installed one on my Ruger American and trigger was as good if not better then any Timney. Took it out and sold it once I knew that rifle wasn’t able to do what I wanted it to do.

So not to get you to give up any secrets...what trigger are u using now? Or is that classified information? 🤣

No secrets here. Timney triggers are my go to for CZ 457 rifles. Trying the Jard and may move it to my best rifle if I get a chance next month.

Doing this in 2 posts. I had a new scope that I bought on here mounted on my CZ 457 this morning. It’s a Nightforce SHV 4-14x56 .250 MOA- MOAR- illuminated. It loses a little (ok, a lot) of magnification from my NightForce Benchrest scope but that now sits on top of my other Rifle.
Figured maybe the rain might stop when I got out of gun shop so I brought everything just in case. Well, it actually worked out and was able to go shooting for a bit.
Here is my first target. Left shot with SK Standard and Right shot with SK Long range. Pretty close I’d say. Didn’t really know how to score that one I zoomed in on. Soooo close to being in and even my scoring plug wasn’t much help. I gave me the lower score and took a 77. Still a good score but kicking myself for missing my last shot. This was 2nd target of the day.

Here is my third target of the day. Again I missed one which bothers me but once again I had a really close call (blow up pic) that I took the lower score on. I had to put this target back up as I missed shooting a second bullet at one of the dots. It was my last SK Long range bullet and had one 5. I figured I would screw it up but I nailed it!
I am very happy with my score.
Shot with my CZ 457 with NightForce SHV scope
SK Long range was working today
Started to sprinkle as I was finishing up this target.

Wow! Some great scores. I'd say your rifle likes that SK ammo. Congrats to you. 👍 I think 7 is the right score on that one in question. It appears to just break the edge. Regardless I would be very happy with that score.

Agreed and I am. Thank you!

First time trying the rimfire challenge. Fun and humbling.

Sadly, the limitation IS equipment, and not skill when it comes to something like this.

But, it was fun to give it a try.

Indoor range makes controlling the variables pretty easy.

I was shooting with my 1985 Ruger 10/22. Some time in the 90s(?) I replaced the barrel. It’s been neglected and probably has fewer than 2,000 rounds since then.

Today it came out for ammo testing and the CFF challenge.

Congratulations, glad you gave it a try. You did have a couple of things going against you with the 10/22 and the ammo. While the 10/22 is a great plinker, one of the best out there, it's not a precision shooter. I used to have a heavy barrel Target model that I think would have been competitive, but sadly that one was sold. It is a challenging target and a lot of fun to shoot. Glad you jumped in!

29 with a 10/22 is actually a pretty good score. Yes, when trying to hit these dots consistently Equipment/ammo matters. Glad you tried it and posted. It’s a fun target.

29 with a 10/22

Factory walnut stock. One day I got the idea to cut out a section and try to make an adjustable cheek piece. That didn’t work out, so I took a piece of pressure treated 2x6 (leftover from building a deck) and carved it into the raised cheek piece. A little wood-putty cleaned it up. :)

The gun’s had multiple paint jobs over the years, this is the latest.

I think it’s a Green Mountain barrel (if memory serves)(I guess I could look).

And an old Tasco scope. Not old enough to be Japanese though. At least it has a focusable objective.

The best 50 yard group it shot today was .72”.

I also brought this out, but didn’t shoot the match with it. Ran out of time.

Its best group was .70”. The plan for today was to shoot a bunch of different brands.

The first two rows were the brown gun. The third row is the white gun.

I like the thumb hole stock. Beautiful! The CCI green tag grouped really well minus the one flyer.

I ran some a buddy had through my CZ and it did pretty good but that was only at 25 yards.

The box I have is definitely from the 90s. Regardless of how it shoots, it’s not like I can get more. But it would show what the gun is possible of.

As for “flyers”, I don’t believe in them. “Called misses” I’ll accept. But flyers? No such thing.

Since the gun went off while aimed at the target, that’s part of the group (sadly).

Something I like about a .22 is that you can shoot 100 round groups and get a very realistic idea of what’s possible.

I shot this at 100 yards with the CCI Standard Velocity.

Shoot enough holes, “flyers” show themselves as really just part of the group. IMO.
You can still get green tag

I took my 10/22 heavy barrel with Vortex 25x scope, and my Cz457 in its nice chassis with a Burris 30x to the 50 yard bench at Zoo City in Franklinville today. I used some of the match targets to get these rifles zero’d with some old RWS Target Rifle SV ammo.
Got reminded of the effect WIND has on .22 ammo, real quick. The Ruger cannot hang with the CZ, but for a semiautomatic .22, it does as well as its poorly-designed stock will allow. Found out that the Vortex scope is awful in comparison to the Burris XTR3. Clarity and turret adjustment is a joke Vortex has foisted on a lot of fanbois. Burris continues to impress for not a lot more money. Well, if you bought prior to Bidenenema🤮
If it quits raining, I will try this challenge with the CZ. I doubt the wind will see a reduction in force. Gotta get some wind doping education.😮‍💨
Target is a nice one!

Wind surly can play the spoiler once once it gets over 8mph at 50 yards. Never few days don’t look very promising since wind will be high. Might have to wait till Thursday for lighter winds and last change the post this months target.

Am betting no one attempted to shoot a target in this wind today. 1 day left for this target and we will be saying goodbye. Tomorrow’s winds look to be calmer so still a chance to knock off our leader and pick March target.

Congrats on the high score of the month. You have definitely dialed it in. Your turn to pick a target. I have been MIA due to a death in the family. Heading back to NC Sunday. Looking forward to getting back to the range.

Thank you Eric. I am sorry for your loss. Safe travels home.

Not sure how this happened but for the first time I actually get to call my own number. I did have the high score for the January/February target and would like to thank all the top shooters for forgetting to shoot. I really enjoyed this target and have to thank @Got2hav1 for picking a good one.
Thank you to everyone who braved the lousy weather and were brave enough to show their good/bad/ugly targets.
Look for the March Edition and get out and shoot!
