I love it, from the pre-big band era all the way through the 70s (but I don't care for the post-bop, fusion stuff). I played upright bass in jazz ensembles from the late-80s through the late-90s, but I do miss it. Anyhoo, I was playing around on YouTube and came across episodes of Jazz Casual, a show from the 60s that featured a jazz artist. Almost 30 episodes on YT.

These were some giants of the genre.

I’m getting into jazz myself and trying to teach myself piano. It’ll be a looong time before I can even sound like I know what I’m doing! Till then I can listen and enjoy the music.

I played most brass instruments, percussion/drums, and bass. I wish I learned piano and guitar.

Give yourself some grace. Jazz piano is difficult. Chords, scales, and rhythms can be hard.

Oh boy... this will put a smile on your face. Joan Chamorro directs the Sant Andreu Jazz Band in Barcelona which is comprised of students - kids - and they are TIGHT. They will often have a professional musician join them for concerts. I am gobsmacked at what Chamorro has been able to do with these kids and I've about worn out their channel.

I know this song is almost cliche but the Joe Morello drum solo in this version at 4:44 if f'ing awesome. His attire does not bely his talent.

The great thing about that album which few people know is that every song has a different time signature, and for the entirety of the song. That was avant garde in the day, no one did that.

Yeah, the drummers of that era were the essence of 'cool.'

Ever make your way to High Point for the JazzFest?

This will brighten your day, especially Vince Giordano's workout on the bass sax at 3:35

This guy and these kids are amazing!!! I’m working my way through their albums now.

Phenomenal isn’t it? Hard enough to imagine teaching any kind of music to teenagers, much less jazz! I think of the self-confidence this experience gives them. Many of the kids have gone on to have professional jazz careers. I am a fan of Alba Armengou, the trumpet player on Easy Money upstream. You must block out the annoying little girl in this video

Have that Wayne Shorter CD. Saw him in Durham not too many years ago. There is a documentary on him on one of the streaming channels. Long but good if you are into him. A lot of tragedy in his life. I have all his Blue Note releases along with the same time period Herbie Hancock. Have all the Weather Report releases as well and listen to that stuff quite often. Big fan of Jaco Pastorious. Not into Wayne's music after Weather report. The is an oft repeated description of jazz as all the musicians in the band playing a different song at the same time. The Wayne Shorter band I saw in Durham a few years ago was like that. I gave up guitar as a teenager as no one could teach me the music I wanted to play...ROCK-N-ROLL!!!

Do the Marsalis brothers still live in Durham?
I know Branford did/does.

Ellis died (split time between Durham and NO), Wynton is elsewhere, Branford still lives in Durham. From time to time he'll play with the NC Central jazz groups. BTW, NCCU's jazz studies/jazz ensembles are some the best in the country.

Didn't Branford call Durham home when he was on the Tonight Show & touring with Sting? It was after that I learned he lived in Durham, and it sounded like he had for a while at that point.

He's amazing. But truly, all those big jazz guys are. Another level, for sure.
