Just introducing myself

Welcome! Sorry, I don't live in the area and all the ranges here, indoor and out, are membership only. Good luck!

Welcome to the CFF family. One word of caution...you know how every family has the crazy uncle? Well, we have two of them. Good luck!! :D

Welcome! Sorry I can't help you with the range question; I use the back lot as do most of my neighbors. For more formal use I also recommend Frontline Defense.

I'm a new gun owner living in Durham NC glad to be a part of the group. Does any one know any good free local out door ranges in the area

Welcome, neighbor!

@Average Joe is right - the closest free range is the NCWRC-owned and open to the public Caswell Shooting Range. It's about 45 minutes from Durham. Five 100-yard rifle lanes and five 25-yard pistol lanes. Don't mistake this for Caswell Ranch, which is a private range that you'll pass on your way to the public range. Here's a pretty good list of public and private ranges across the state: https://www.ncwildlife.org/Outdoor-Activities/Shooting-Ranges.

The public range fills up very fast, especially on weekends. If you want to go shooting on a nice Saturday (9a-5p) or Sunday (1p-5p), plan on arriving at least 30 minutes before opening and expect to see vehicles already lined up outside the gate. The place is small and crowded, and there are some questionable visitors to say the least. But it's free, and you get what you pay for.

Thanks went and checked it out pretty laid back and not a bad range just don't like the drive but got to do what I got to do for now

@Lostchildjr90 it's a nice enough range when there's few or no one there, but busy weekends really have a tendency to draw out some riff raff. I've seen more acts of gun negligence and downright idiocy than I care to share. They replaced the RSO with a fella from Virginia a couple years ago, and he has been great.

Happy shooting.
