Anyone up to fishing the Catawba south of the Rt73 dam? I was going to put in at the Mountain Island Kayak Access and go up river.

Really looking for a kayak buddy for 1st time trip.

Duration 3-5hrs, starting morning or afternoon.

I just saw this. If I didn’t already have plans I’d make the trip out there to go. Is it really your first kayak trip?

I didn't get any response so I asked my wife to go. She's borrowing a kayak. Of course this all depends if we get the T-storm that's expected.

Yeah, the maiden voyage, can't wait!

@ChickenHawk some other time then.

You should have fun. I love getting out on the water in mine. We went to visit my wife’s family outside of Roanoke a couple of weeks ago. It was a good excuse to hit the James River and catch Smallmouth. What kind of kayak did you get?

What made you go with this one over any of the other pedal drives. I am planning on testing a Hobie tomorrow. We’ve looked at most of the pedal yaks and to my fiancé and myself the Hobie seems like it will work best for us. I would like to make sure we consider everything and don’t over look any other options.

I liked the design of the boat. The drive seemed stonger vs the Hobie flippers but those sure are unique.

Definitely try both so you make a decision that's best for you.

The only minor thing with the propel, is when you go to lift the drive up, you have to get
the prop straight up and down for it to lift up. Keep that in mind when coming to shore.

Yeah, I heard about that. I think I'm going to design a simple spring loaded index tab. It will be attached to the deflection plate so you'll need to push it down, rotate the prop so it contacts the tab. Not a must have but it'll give me something to build...

Y'alls kayaks are too rich for my blood. Lol. I'm a peasant that must paddle his way along. I aspire to have a pedal drive one day though. That should definitely make the lake section much easier.

I hear you. I work a normal job, also have a legit side biz and another 'hobby biz'. The 8-5 job pays the bank, utilities, etc. The other two are extra $. It also helps that both kids are married off and out of the house. :)

Oh, and I planned for this purchase for about a year...

We were thinking about buying a boat, but also trying to pay off any debt we already have as quickly as possible. The more I thought about a boat and all the expenses involved with that the more I disliked the idea. We already fish from kayaks and I enjoy that, but paddling and fishing don’t always go hand in hand. The answer to that for me is a pedal yak, even though it is a lot more expensive than a paddle yak it’s much cheaper than most boats. That’s what has led us to possibly making a purchase, we will likely know tomorrow.

The prop needing to be vertical wasn't much of an issue. I didn't think the 'cover' was needed when using the drive. Ah, can you say
WATER!
I had a few ah, oh moments when some boat would blast by and a wave would come up and overflow the tunnel.

I did need to revise the cart, it was too flexible. I made it to break down for transport if I didn't want to leave it in the truck.

Overall it was a good trip. Didn't go far, did some fishing but generally got used to the boat.

What did you make the cart out of. I made a pvc one for my big rig and it’s a pain to use because of the size of the big rig. Trying to lift the boat and position the cart takes some patience.

Cart is made from 3/4" pvc. It is easy to work with and if I screw up, inexpensive to redo. It's strong enough too. I'll add it to the DYI section when done.

The position is a bear to get right but I figure practice, practice. Just like strapping down the tractor to the trailer. It took me almost 45 min the fist time, now it takes 10 mim.
