keeping the sun off my head - show me your hats

Here is my old, dirty Stetson without the vent holes. It fits like a glove but gets pretty hot in warmer weather.

This morning I went to Cavender's Western Store. They had a huge selection of hats. I have Stetson and Charlie One Horse felt/beaver hats that were kinda pricey. But, I have a hard time putting a lot of money in a straw hat. Cavender's has all the popular brands and then they also have their own brand. I bought this one, it is Cavender's brand and fit the best of any that I tried on. Hopefully, the vents will make it much cooler.

Very nice!

Something else I wear that’s not pricey. Dorfman Pacific. Stiff cotton twill. I have two. One I left on the tailgate of the truck and backed over it. Nothing a damp cloth and hot iron couldn’t fix. Mostly. This one I found in the Mast Store in Boone, and the other had the RedHead trade name in it at Bass Pro.

I got one of those Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure hats for backpacking. Looks goofy but it works a treat! It's actually got a proper UPF rating (50+), folds up nice and small, only weighs 2.6 oz, wicks, and has full coverage with a soft rear flap. Even has a sunglasses holder! I've used it for a few mid/late summer backpacking excursions and it's super comfortable.

Mine is about the same style as yours, but cloth instead of straw. I bought it years ago when we went to the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, but I didn't start wearing it regularly until after my fourth case of skin cancer (on the side of my face where baseball caps do not protect). Now I wear it to keep the sun off my face, and my wife off my a$$. I also have a folding hat the dermatologist gave me to wear after skin treatment that made my skin very sensitive to the sun. It's ugly, but effective, and can be carried in your pocket.

I've gotten old, and been cooked too many times. Face now gets angry red.

Gonna get a GIANT straw cowboy hat for matches. Been looking but haven't pulled trigger yet. Gotta work out ear protection. And figure out which hats are not super hot, as some straw is.
Great minds. I was looking at ear plugs this afternoon. I’d love to be able to wear a brimmed hat at matches. Plus muffs are so dang hot.
I am not optimistic though considering I wear 31NRR now (HL Impact Pros) and anything else I have double up with foam plugs.

When I was ~20, my dad mentioned that he lost his "lucky" fishing hat - a cheap old ratty thing. I knew how much he liked it, so i bought a replacement - a Tilley of similar style, but MUCH nicer.
Of course he didn't like it much...
My brother stole it, because it reminded of his old boonie hat in the marines, and he appreciated the upgrade.
I was grumpy because I would have gladly taken it back, but I didn't get that option.
So of course my brother wore it constantly for 20 years. and then the jerk literally took it with him to the grave!
Somewhere in the Great Lakes Memorial Cemetery is one really nice, really loved, hat.

It's just not the hat but knowing how to wear it. And this guy knows how to wear a hat.

.
Thank you.
;)

It’s a medium sized hat that didn’t belong to me on an X-large noggin, but it worked for the shoot.
pic was taken about 1982-83

I upgraded my Outdoor Research Sombriolet to a Shape Flexer Lite sun hat. It is a Gen 2 model only available through Kickstarter, Amazon is still selling Gen 1 though.

Gen 2 to Gen 1 is only some slight improvements, functionality is nearly identical. The brim is larger and MUCH stiffer than the OR hat's I have. It will stay in place even in a stiff breeze, and it has a Sun cape for your neck.

I just check the website and it looks like they are blowing out the L/XL Kaki models fro $20
Shipping options range from $5-$7

Speaking of men in hats...

Once upon a time men wore hats because they had a sense of style.........

Men wearing hats as a part of their wardrobe needs to come back.
My wife said the exact same thing tonight as we were watching Mad Men. I can’t pull it off quite like @fieldgrade or Don Draper so I stick to a ball cap.

Hat came in. Very slightly crushed in back. Not bad enough to send back in my view. I’ll treat it as the first ding in the fender.

That healed red spot on the end of my nose that was a hole the diameter of .45acp is the reason for a wider brim.

Good looking hat. Let me know if it breathes.

It won’t breath like that new one of yours, but I’m skeered of letting the sun in on top of my head because there’s not much hair up there anymore.

Pro tip - If your new hat is a smidge loose, and has a traditional inside headband that’s not glued in, you can take a couple of 2” square bore cleaning patches, fold them in half, and tuck behind the inside headband to tighten to suit you. In front or in back is where I put them, not on the sides.

I wear a boonies style hat when working outdoors, plus I wear ear pro when using equipment. I've always used plugs, but I've heard good things about muffs with a behind the head band. That may be something to check out. That way you can still wear your wide brim, and double up ear pro.

These are my Chicago hats. I used to wear the Multicam hat to mow my yard and freakout my old neighborhood Karen on the neighborhood watch. I rode around on my lawn tractor with an empty beer bottle in the cup holder...she'd lose her mind. She called the cops once. They drove by and said "so what?"
I didn't even get to chat with them...another neighbor got the story from her and told me about it.

The brown hat was great for walking the dog in the rain. I fear both are too hot for down here. So far I'm just wearing a ball cap and that seems ok, but I stay to the shade as a German Swede with pale skin the sun doesn't like me one bit.

Anybody tried the SA Fishing hats?
I’ve been on the verge for a while and just haven’t done it. I have one similar now but it’s almost worn out...

It looks like it is “one size fits some” so just be sure you’ve got a medium sized noggin.

How long have you been here? I grew up in and around Chicago. Moved away 22 years ago. Been here 15 years. I've become acclimated to the weather here. Pretty soon you'll probably be able to resist the urge to break out the shorts and tee's when the temp gets above 50! You may even develop a trucker tan. I would describe my coloring as fishbelly white, except for the parts that get sun. Almost a ginger.

The first Christmas we were here, I wore shorts and a windbreaker to the mall. Everyone else was wearing winter coats, lol.
