I've been on the search for the best solution for splinting firewood to cook with on camping trips. I finally got a froe last year but was not really happy with it. Broke down and bought a kindling cracker. I used it for 6 days on vacation and have to say I'm very impressed with it. It handles nearly anything that would fit in it. The only problems I had were really gnarly knots. I had a couple that would not split. I used a standard 3lb hammer to drive the wood. I set mine up on a stump of wood to make it easier to use.

I give it 2 opposable thumbs up.

Here is a video, not mine, of how it works.

Did you remember to wear your hearing protection?

In a pinch you can baton with a large knife like the OTC RTAC-II. That's what I do, but then again I'm just splitting up enough to get a fire going, 2-3 small rounds at most.

I was splitting down 2 bundles of wood a day for 6 days so we could cook. This thing was a real time saver. I've used axes, hatchets, large knives, and a froe. Nothing was as easy as this was.

I agree with the knotty wood. Small knots it can handle with a bit more effort. But the big ones are too much trouble. I choose the bundles knowing I had to split them so that helped.

That's very cool. Guess I'll be getting one of those. It hasn't happened yet, but that will save one of my fingers that I'll eventually whack off or break splitting kindling with my Fiskars chopping axe.

I was hoping this thread was going to be about Chief Jason's new firewood selling business.

If I were a snowflake I would be offended by this. But the funny part is it's true on WAY too many levels. Lmao.

The ear muffs thru me, so he can't hear himself cuss when he smacks himself with that short handled wacker?

If you need this for a fire bowl you didn't have a big enough fire the night before in a fire bowl or you have the small bowl!
That's right! I had the first fire in mine last weekend. I was burning scraps left over from a building project. The next day at about 2:00 pm, I still had coals! Lots of coals! I'd like one just for kindling.
