Kitchen gun: .38 spl. vs .44 spl.

You're setting off a mini explosion in your hands so expect those hands to feel some "jolt".

The thing to focus on is managing that jolt enough to put shots accurately on target.

I get that, but no gun I've ever shot has done me like this revolver....and I've shot a few guns lately! People take me to the range and hand me guns to try...I've tried a lot.
I've never had a gun hurt my trigger finger...WTH is that all about? Big surprise for me....

My pet load for my for wife's ultra lite is a 110 grain hollow based wadcutter pushed to 750 fps, while this load won't stop an elephant is is extremely accurate and not unpleasant to shoot in a ultra lite. After watching my wife run this load at the range a few of the guys are now carrying this load in their ultra lites . If you could find some one that reloads to work up a load for your revolver, perhaps you might be inclined to keep it.she carries hotter stuff in her heavier revolvers, but sometimes you need to match the load to the gun, just a suggestion

I'd love to keep the gun, but I don't know anyone who reloads. It might just be better to let it go and get something that's not going to keep hurting me.

I checked and I'm 3 hrs and half away and I've got pressing family matters that have to be dealt with or I would have already volunteered
Hopefully someone closer will help

Is this a Tauri by chance? :D

It's lightweight so there's not enough mass to counter some of the recoil which leaves your hands to do all of the work. It's hurting your finger because it recoils upwards sharp enough to slap your finger with or between the trigger guard and trigger. Ruger LCP/Keltec P3AT are notorious for the same thing which is why mine gets carried a lot and shot very little. I hate it but I also understand the trade off iget for ease of carry. Pretty sure it's also causing you to develop a bad flinch so I highly suggest selling/trading it to be replaced with something steel framed. There is no reason for you to hang onto that Taurus with the active Buy/Sell/Trade section we have here..
Something else to remember about recoil management is that the bullet has left the barrel by the time you even begin to feel the recoil impulse so regardless to how sharp it is your focus should be on sight alignment and trigger press.

That's another problem with the revolver....can't really see the sights....and yet I'm fairly accurate with it. I didn't get a chance to shoot it today, which is probably a good thing. I shot my p238, a p365, and a big old 1911 something in .45...that was very nice and heavy! The 9mm: not good at all.

Where did you hit with the P365? I find mine shoots a bit low for CCW distances.

Jeff Cooper said one of the most dangerous men to ever walk the North American Continent as James Butler Hickock. His choice of firearm shot an 80 grain bullet about 700 fps.
Remember handguns are pitiful for protection. The "Indian" is far more important than the arrow. ONLY 2 things count Placement and Penetration.
All that to say, your wife's load may not indeed stop an elephant. I doubt seriously if she will ever be in fear of an elephant. Her Load will do her fine.

Millie,

If you go back a page you can see where my 442 front sight is painted orange. Really makes it stand out to acquire. The other blued guns also have their front sights painted. I'll see if I have another picture saved.

CD

Millie you have told me you had a problem with recoil from your snubbie 38 even with 148 grain wadcutters. There is no way you could stand the recoil of the 44 special. It has quite a bit more recoil probable double of the 38 special

I'm thinking @mille needs a 44mag in a lever action carbine!

This was just a thread to see what people would choose, I'm not looking for a .44 myself, no worries, but I might try one when I go to Battery Oaks in a few weeks! I want to get my hands on lotsa stuff!

Oh, but they are fun. And it would give you the ability to make nice hits and groups at a little extra range. Try it, you'll like it. My daughter really enjoy rifles. Moreso than pistols now that she's done both a little.
Maybe I'll try one at Billy's place. I'm open to suggestions.

If you are into shooting, home defense and fun you should probably try a few rifles and maybe a shotgun. I love the idea and my feeble attempts at shooting dime sized groups at 100 and 200 yards with a rifle. Fun stuff. Plus if things ever really got dicey around the neighbirhood rifles are much more potent self defense weapons than pistols. More bullets, velocity and damage. A worthy tool to have in the box.

Well, I can only promise to try some out. I'll amend my list that I sent to Billy, and see what happens!

From the sounds of things Billy will have plenty of good options for you. Should be a great time. I am jealous.
So....go there! He seems to be a hospitable guy, and seems to like having people come and shoot his guns.

Oh, I'd love to. And he is so overly hospitable that @BatteryOaksBilly might even welcome a sad Yankee, CA transplant like me. But I'd have to have the free weekend first. At this point in my life that ain't easy. But as soon as I think I can pull it off there will be a bunk house request to Billy and a PM to @Geezer so I can try to bribe him into sampling some of his Weber grill skills. If I go I want to make a weekend of it,

Just got caught up and what I’ve learned is that if Millie wants a custom practice load in .38 I’m happy to try to work something up, but we’re pretty far apart and she’s gonna be better served long term by commercial ammo. Also, if @Combat Diver is ready to move that model 57/58 along I’d love to get a PM.

Go ahead and start planning. I'll put in a good word to Billy for you. You're already a member of CFF so that will go a long way with him. It would be good to see you again.

@Millie let me know when you're coming this way.

I'm really not wanting for someone to go to a lot of trouble for this gun. I think after I shoot it tomorrow, I'll be letting it go, as I've tried to get along with it (and except for one time) it keeps hurting me! I just need a heavier gun, I think.

Yes, I will, it'll be sometime in the last half of the month.

I have a box of ammo that you should try before you get rid of it. I could either mail it to you or get it to Billy for when you come down.

Millie, you can sell your gun anytime. It would be good to hang on to it till you come here. We too have special loads for you to try AND grips. There are several solutions to try for your problem BUT you might decide the juice ain't worth the squeeze! We will go slow and when you leave you can digest All the info on All the guns you want to shoot.
We are on for 26 January. All are invited to visit as always But this day is Millie's day. Come for support, food and company But the range will be at her disposal.

No pressure, right?? Lol. Don't make it my day necessarily! Just let everyone go about their usual business. But you're the boss, and I'll be there to learn stuff.....lol.

I say save the time and just sell that Ultra Lite off to get something in a steel frame. Not a fan of sticking with something that requires you to have someone load special ammo for it. Not a fan of something that requires you to use reloaded ammo or downloaded ammo for defense. Not saying it can't be done but I'm a fan of path of least resistance. Based on all of these discussions I'm set in my belief that for you simple is better and you should avoid anything that requires too many extra steps.

Well, I'm also thinking this could be too complicated and I'm looking into letting the gun go. We'll see what happens.....

Poke, rolls and grits. Poke yo feets unner the table, roll yo eyes and grit yo teets. If you'll come we'll have Surf and Turf. Pig's feet and Jelly Fish.
Pigs Feet can be really tasty.

Particularly if the pig happened to step in something sweet on the way into the slaughterhouse. ;)
