Knife forum knife exchange

What kind of files do you use for you gimping? I'm curious to attempt some gimping on some junk knives to learn. The most I've ever done was filing away a folding knife lockbar to match handle profile.

I mark the blade for spacing reference and then use a triangular file and then round files followed by hand sanding. This is done pre heat treat - not sure it would work well on hardened knives.

Yeah not sure how to go about it on knives that have been hardened, don't have too many that need added gimping anyways. What's the blue stuff you use to mark off portions of the blade before grinding the primary bevel? Is it just sharpie?

Yep - as an alternative you can use a magic marker, but in my experience doesnt work as well.

I really like the profile and choice of steel
Will this get scales or are you going for a minimalist style ?

If it were for a back up pack knife I’d go minimalist with a skeleton grip but the fellow it’s going to is going to use it as his primary hunting knife so I’m going to go with scales. I haven’t decide if it’s going to be stag, micarta or wood yet. I’m leaning towards stag to match a Bowie i made him a couple years ago.

@opaul, what blade material? What's the blade length and overall length? Looks like about 3" and 7.5".
