The past 2 weeks have been hectic. In addition to Jerek having an appointment 3 days each week, Trigger (our Great Dane) had to go to the vet for an ear infection and Colt went to the dentist for the first time. Colt did really well and enjoyed going “trick or treat”. Jerek had chemo last Thursday and today. He had 3 drugs both times. Today was the last time for him to get Rituxan and Doxorubicin. Between chemo and steroids, he has had more side effects this time.

The steroids have caused increased heartburn, hiccups, and a rash on his chest. The chemo has caused redness and inflammation in his mouth and throat that has made it difficult to eat and swallow. Surprisingly, his counts have held strong for the most part. His hemoglobin has stayed in the 14’s and 15’s. This is actually in the normal range. His platelets have been somewhat low, but have held steady in the 80-100 range. His white count and neutrophils were actually high as a result of the steroids. Today was the first day the white count actually took a dip, but the neutrophils were still holding strong.

Last week his fibrinogen unexpectedly dropped. They aren’t quite sure what caused this to happen, but it required an extra visit last Friday in order for him to get a replacement. He started back on steroids today after being off of them for a week. While they may make his numbers come up initially, his doctor fully expects his numbers to drop by the end of next week. Next week is a scheduled week off and will simply be 2 visits for labs only. His counts next Thursday will determine when he will start the second half of the course. Tomorrow is his neurology appointment. This is simply to decide if he needs to continue taking Keppra or not since his MRI is now clean. As always, we appreciate the continued support and prayers. We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
