I just received a letter from our Glorious DMV that my "Nationwide" liability coverage has lapsed on my 98 Honda. There is a $50 fine associated with that.

I've never owned a 98 Honda and haven't been insured through Nationwide since... early 90's?

I went and checked my credit report and I don't see anything suspicious.

This is going to be interesting..... I wonder how bad it would be if the Gov was involved in our healthcare......

Record the conversation for us, please.

I recieved one a few months ago saying my Farmers ins lapsed. I don't have farmers, never have.

I called DMV, they said it was a 'widespread software glitch.'

Both of my sons recieved a similar letter from DMV with various forms of inaccuracies.

I'm dealing with this right now also. I sold a Subaru in September and turned the plate in. I got a first notice in December and could not get anyone with DMV on the phone. I did leave a couple messages. I got another notice with late fees last month. Finally got someone on the phone and they asked for proof I turned the plate in. I just handed it to them while registering another vehicle. I ended up mailing in a copy of the bill of sale hoping that will take care of it. Who Knows?

It may be a little more difficult for me since I never owned the car they are referencing. Nor do I have Nationwide insurance. I was afraid of a stolen identity but my credit history looks ok.

I sold a car to one son recently, and another to the other son. Got them retitled in their names.

Later got one of those "big red letter” letters from DMV reporting that our carrier, and the carrier for my boys, that coverage lapsed on one of the cars. Policies were all listed as in force.

Called my agent. He said this happens all the time, unfortunately.

AHA!!! My Google fu indicates this is a motorcycle and I do own a 98 Honda motorcycle. Never crossed my mind that it could be the bike. I've only had it a year and I'm still not insured with Nationwide so I "assume" the previous owner was.

This should be a simple show proof of insurance and be done with it. I'll most likely still have to go to the DMV to get this straightened out.

Well that was kind of uneventful..... Thankfully...

Had the same issue, there is a form that you have to get notarized and then send to the DMV. That’s all I remember.

Call your agent. There's a form they send. That's all it takes

Seeing it happen a lot, usually happens when you buy a vehicle from a private party and they cancel the vehicle off their insurance. Instead of matching it up with the tags DMV must be going off the Vin# now.

When I sold my bike I had to turn in the tag and get a letter from DMV showing same before I could cancel insurance.
Respectfully, you need another agent. Or another insurance company. I’ve never had to do that and I’ve owned vehicles in NC since 1972.

Turn in the plate at tag office. Ask for a receipt, which I just file (not trash). Call agent, cancel insurance. That is all I’ve ever done. I’m not seeing any other language to the contrary at that link unless I missed it.

Sold two vehicles in the past 90 days.

@Amp Mangum Is there anything I am missing?

Edit: if you tried to cancel the insurance before turning in the tag, THAT would get you one of those letters. Or they send them out when they get it wrong.

Ain't that what I said? Turn in tag first then cancel insurance.

You said you had to get a letter from DMV. I have never once in fifty years had to do that. No disrepect. I think maybe either DMV did something wrong, or your insurance company made you jump through a hoop I have never had to jump through with multiple other insurance carriers in years past.

A letter a receipt or what ever you want to call it. You ain't supposed to cancel before you turn in the plates.

Right. But the only time I have ever once even used that receipt when I turned in the tag was requesting a refund on property tax I had recently paid. That is the only time, and only did that once or twice. No insurance company has ever requested it from me.

Just did that with the car that had 340k miles and the transmission went. Sold it to a scrap yard and gave him the title. Turned in plate, called agent. I have the receipt and will file it away safe for a ehile

Turn plates into DMV and then cancel the vehicle off the policy, you don't have to get a letter from DMV to do that. It's a good idea to get a receipt showing the tags were turned in but the company/agent doesn't need that to cancel coverage on the vehicle.

Your Honor, requesting permission to treat this as a hostile witness.

Mr. Shatn’rider. Did you, or did you not make the above statement in the presence of this forum, in addition to the entire world wide web?

Your Honor, let the record show that clear irrefutable evidence has been provided that I is right and he r wrong.

Maybe if we were drinkin’ it would make more sense.

Tell them that your wife got upset because of their mistake and had a heart attack.
