I have a Acer Predator Laptop that is about 5 years old. It is a Acer PH317-51. It still runs well. I basically use it as y desktop replacement. I am having an issue with my battery and power supply. The laptop is left plugged in 99% of the time. Recently the AC adapter keeps flipping back between charging and not charging the battery. It beeps which I have corrected so it no longer does that each time but the screen brightness still flickers. I am wondering if anyone knows how to prevent the flickering. I can deal with the battery charging intermittently but the monitor flickering is going to kill me. If I can fix this I will keep on keeping on. If I cant I guess this laptop goes to pile.

As far as fixing the issue itself I have tried a different power supply. The issue continued. I have not swapped out the battery because the OEM cost $100+ and I am not sure if it is going to solve the issue. I have reset the battery and it still continues. I ran a battery report from the command prompt. I looks like it is toggling from and active to suspended status. You can see the pattern below.

I believe that this is mostly something on the motherboard or software related because the power supply provides power and the battery charges even if it only charges 80% of its original capacity but holds a charge. I does not seem to matter at what % the battery is at. It does it a 50% and at 98%. It does seem to do it more when the battery % is higher.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Can you easily remove the battery?...meaning not having to disassemble the laptop?

If so..see if screen still flickers just on AC power
I have to take out the hard drive and about 15 screws.

Yeah, I might just have to crack it open and take a look.

Swap the battery, it’s probably pretty easy. You can usually get one on eBay for $30ish. Also, if you change brightness setting in both modes to match you probably won’t see the flicker, but some laptops change contrast etc so it’ll probably be a bit noticeable.

It’s worth a try given replacement cost but to be honest it sounds more like a main board issue than a battery issue.

Just double checked it. It flickers when in the Bios

If it still flickers in BIOS then it’s not software related.

It could be that the jack has developed a crack in a solder joint. Easy fix if you can get to it and feel comfortable soldering.
I'm leaning to this as well. Might be worth a computer shop bill if you don't feel comfortable or don't want to have to get a new computer.

Try the power settings. It may be set to dim the screen in battery power (typical setting). Turn this off and as it switches between charging and not charging it should remain the same brightness. This of course does not fix the intermittent charging issue which should be addressed.

Regardless of other possible issues, after 5 years the battery is toast.
I never really run it on the battery. I am not sure if the battery could be causing it. I might take the battery out and see if it still does it. If it does then the battery is not the source.

Just remember to pick it up before Giuliani can get his hands on it. 😂

The board controls the charge controller. If the battery is SO far gone it could be causing the issue. I’ve seen instances where a battery, even an almost dead one needs to be in line to power a device. So it could be jumping back and forth. But it could also be a bad board.

Sounds like I need to either get a battery or punt....

Find the display setting that says dim in battery.
In the Display settings there is 'Dimmed display brightness' and 'Enable adaptive brightness', try turning adaptive brightness off if enabled and also increasing the dimmed brightness level.

No such settings in my setup. :(

Could it be the jack where the power cord interfaces the computer? I have and Acer Aspire 7 and had intermittne issues. Ordered a new jack for around $8.00. Had to take the back off, but was an fix.easy

It could be the cable from the board to the monitor - repeated opening/closing = crimping/fraying the cable . . . or the cable is coming unseated on either end

Would explain why it flickers even in the BIOS
