This was last week - I'm glad the officer is ok...... he definitely handled the situation like a boss.

What do y'all think about him shooting through his own windshield? I'm definitely armchair quarterbacking here, but I don't think that was too smart.

I see no issue with him shooting through. At least then he has some sight alignment as opposed to blindly blasting by holding his hand out the window. I am no ballistic expert, but I would imagine the glass would deflect the first rounds through a good bit, but after he blasted a hole through it the others should be relatively online. If anything it keeps the bad guys heads down and makes them be on the defensive. From what I read there were two bad guys so one had the pleasure of not having to drive while fighting like the cop did.

I have seen him get some grief online from the web experts on his fumbled reload, but even that I see no issue in, the man is dealing with a major adrenaline dump and has bullets flying around. Just staying in the fight was pretty commendable.

Agree he recovered his magazine issue during reload, they need 33 round magazines for situations like this one.
I hope he had some hearing protection.
Would like to see a wireless remote mic switch on the steering wheel, so he will not need to hold the patrol car mic.

I don't think the rounds fired through the windshield would be effective, given the thickness of the truck tailgate
and the back of the bed behind the cab of the truck.

He did a great job considering he was taking rounds during the pursuit.

This just confirms that there is a war out in the streets where criminals could care less about human life.

Questionable at best since the bullets could have ricocheted in any direction. Wait for your moment and deliver effective fire as he did at the end. The rounds through the windshield had no visible effect on the suspects. I do comment him for immediately getting cover when the suspect vehicle was against the wall.....
As to his reload, it was almost like his magazine holders were on his right side??? At least he recovered from that fumble....

Obviously a decision made on the fly, but not sure why shooting is better than ramming, much less shooting through the windshield. Even if the officer’s vehicle is disabled in the process, there didn’t appear to be any shortage of them available.

That was my thought as I was watching...

Why one of the multiple cars that got to his bumper didn't perform the PIT maneuver?

I've never been in the situation, but I have to believe it's been presented at some point.

Does the department have an SOP on firing while driving?
An SOP on high speed pursuit in an urban/populated area while steering with your knees and trying to aim through a windshield?

I'm happy the officer prevailed. I'm not at all happy with his training and judgement.

Shooting thru the windshield in a populated area, fumbled reload and weak hand thumb crossed over.
Where did all those misses go? I am glad it ended well anyway.

Looks like he has 3-4 service stripes on his sleeve, so I'm going to assume his decisions come from experience. I'm curious where the rounds landed, looks like the shots out the window had some effect. I didn't see any reports of bystanders being hit. Also, looks like he was just about down to one magazine before it was even over.

What do you mean??? After the shots through the windshield the criminals car slowed drastically, I bet he hit the driver.

One dead gangbanger and one shot up 3 time felon. A happy ending! 60+ rounds shot. So much for worrying about over penetration. AIRBALLS...even though, enough connected for the good guys this time.

This is one of the wildest cop things ive ever seen and it was on NBC tonight in a much abbreviated form. The u toob video is much longer. Surprised the cop didnt get a ricochet back at him. Definitely spray and pray but he got the job done. Damn that had my adrenalin pumping.

I would be against shooting through the windshield unless this has been a proven option. My concern is the loss of visibility while still driving.

My concern may have previously been proved to be a non-issue by some study that makes this all ok...but it seems like a bad idea when you are still operating a vehicle.

Wild video, thanks for sharing that.

Also, speaking of shooting videos in Vegas...

I am not sure whether that was the best way to do it or not, but the chase itself was already endangering a lot of people. I think statistically, 3 SUVs speeding the wrong way down a divided highway is far more dangerous than 30 random shots. Most of the shots probably hit the fleeing vehicle or pavement. I have been known to drive with my knees before - I would definitely do that in order to get a better grip and keep shots on target and faster. I suspect that with all the equipment they are juggling, most cops are pretty good at driving with their knees. Just guessing on that though. Heck just coffee and a donut takes two hands! I keed! I keed!

I think I'd cut the guy some slack. Could use a little reload practice though :)

I'm sure Vegas PD has no shortage of helicopters and cruisers. Back off, follow to a safer, less populated area, then take out the driver. Shooting from a moving car puts innocent bystanders at risk, and needlessly so. I'm sure we wouldn't be hearing his praises if he'd shot someone's kid.

He calls for a chopper. I don't remember hearing a response to the request.

We have on occasion shot from moving cars here. It's difficult to do when you are going slow, can't imagine under these conditions. I wanted everyone to do it JUST in case it ever came up. That's not a good thing to try to learn on the fly.

Watched LivePD few weeks ago, one department in GA deployed the StarChase GPS tracker device.

Would like the device to interface to the engine management system to slow the car down,
or even deploy the airbag if the driver is shooting, would require dept approval to do this
on a case by case basis. OnStar can slow a car down if the car has it.
